the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 20 • tuesday november 22 1994 all the lehigh news first at&t grant funds asian american studies by merry abrams news writer with the help from a 20,000 grant from at&t lehigh has developed a new program of asian studies in an effort to increase the level of academic diversity for students last year a group of asian-american stu dents wanted a new course involving asian american studies there was a latin studies department an african-american department butno east asian american studies department mona chadha 97 vice president of cultural affairs for the asian cultural society said the students wrote a proposal and submit ted it to raymond wylie chairman of the international relations department and head of the new east asian studies department profes sor wylie said we could get a course going but that we would need to find fund ing and a profes sor chadha said."lfwecould do that than we could have an experimental program for two semesters in order to raise the money the students in the asian cultural society conducted a phone a-thon aimed at parents of asian-american the internationalization of lehigh's curriculum is one of our most important objectives and this is a nice move in that direction ch*»»sm assistant vice president of development students at lehigh they also tried to raise the money through other fund-raisers such as a carnation sale although the money raised did help the students were forced to look to other op tions to raise the bulk of neces sary funds we tried ev erything to find more money the students in volved most of whom graduated last year eventually turned to a newsletter listing of available grants we applied for a grant from at&t chadha said we expected between two and three thousand dollars to be offered but we were really shocked when we were granted 20,000 toward asian american studies chadha said christine smith assistant vice president of development said the university was ap proached by at&t because they were inter ested in the area of asian-american studies at&t made a grant to lehigh for various asian issues including this new course the money granted will also help the asian cultural society by recruiting asian students at lehigh and funding the cultural read a baw photo by rebecca murpiiey many students participated in the annual turkey trot an intramural race which began outside packard chapel and continued up the hill as shown some rotc members ran the race with full backpacks and flags while dressed in army fatigues saturday dance party battles hill by emily busch news writer the entire lehigh campus was partying saturday night and lower grace hall rocked with dance music and a fantastic display of lights the video dance party which was sponsored by the student activities council and late night at lehigh as a fund-raiser for the asian cultural society started at 10 p.m and ran until approximately 2 a.m lower grace was set up with three large movie screens where music videos were shown the videos were accompanied by lights and a smoke machine attendance was low when the dance began but as the evening pro gressed some people came off the hill and out of their dorms into grace for a night of dancing but attendance was still low monica cercone 97 said i expected a big turnout i thought there would be many more people the turnout was poor because of parties everywhere else on campus according to liz thaler 95 presi dent of late night at lehigh thaler said the dance was competing with the hill parties and a beach party at the umoja house in warren square flyers were handed out announc ing the video dance party but sev eral students said they believed the attendance was low because it was not well publicized scheduling a dance party on le high-lafayette weekend is risky be cause of the popularity of fraternity parties on this weekend said sean seamone 96 a member of sac one of the problems thaler sees with programs like these is many students complain there is nothing to do at lehigh there are so many programs available to students we throw par ties like this and we even bring come dians here it's all here for them they can't complain there is nothing to do thaler said originally the dance party was to benefit both the asian cultural soci ety and the black students union however when the umoja house scheduled their beach party for the same night the bsu backed out of the video dance party law minor dropped due to lack of professors by jessica norris news writer the law and legal institutions minor program was discontinued af ter faculty members decided last spring they could no longer continue theprograrn the minor was started in the mid 19705 by 12 faculty members who had an active interest in law accord ing to the program s director j . ral ph lindgren professor of philosophy the program was formed shortly after lehigh decided not to create a law school it received some na tional notoriety because it was one of the first law minor programs in the country the program was based in the college of arts and sciences but the faculty and students included people from all colleges in the university since its inception the original faculty involved in the program who retired were either replaced with staff who had different interests or were not replaced at all by 1993 four of the original 12 faculty were gone and the remaining eight were working towards the integrity of their own major fields the minor programs don't hire people lindgren said they exist on the goodwill of departments to spare faculty to pursue the minor's interest according to lindgren the law minor thrived while it lasted in any given year there were 45 people in the minor and the students that were in it declared it the stron gest minor in the university lindgren said the minor was an 1 8 credit-hour program stressing systematic analy sis of con temporary legal institutions and their historical antecedents it also included a research paper com ponent and attending the tresolini lecture series a yearly address to the students by someone accom plished in the field of law in anticipation of the program's discontinuance the credit hours re quired were reduced to 15 by elimi nating the research paper in the spring 1992 semester however
