a senior picture will immortalize a student's final year in college it is probably the one picture that every one wants to be just right however this year many seniors have been unhappy with theirportraitsandeven more upset with the 5 retake fee i don't know what happened this year but it seems like everyone i know is getting their pictures re taken said kevin herrema 94 i've heard complaints that range from people looking too pale to people's body's being contorted into strange positions in the pictures although many students are dis pleased with their pictures and the retake fee part of the problem is that students are unaware that their com plaints have been heard linda lipko department coordi nator of journalism and communica tion said the situation is being handled and it should not be blown out of proportion she said that lehigh has been using merin studios of philadelphia for a number of years and that they are aware of the problems and doing everything they can to help please see choir page 8 all the acts were good and we were just in it to have a good time we didn't even know it was a contest until saturday morning andy weintraub 94 member of first-place group an a cappella group consisting of andy weintraub 94 jerome halligan 95 munyachiura 97 and brent lynch 97 won first place with their performance of two songs wonderful girl and lean on me we have only been together for three weeks and this is our first and last performance chiura said on stage weintraub said we're not sure why the judges picked us all the acts were good and we were just in it to have a good time we didn't even know it was a contest until saturday morning second place went to another a cappella group consisting tim cross 96 lachelle veals 94 joan dorcely 95 and yashana mcauley 94 third place as won by new generation which con sisted of cross veals dorcely mcauely marc wilson 97 scott singleton 95 ivan wilkins 95 tamara lewis 97 and was con ducted by tommy johnson 93 h johnson conductor of new generation said i thought it was a good time i enjoyed myself i wish the audience had been more into it but all the performers seemed to be supporting each other instead of just sitting there the winners of the talent show were able to choose their own prizes out of gift certificates for bethlehem sporting goods and the vineyard restaurant and movie passes to lehigh valley cinema performers spanned all areas including singing play ing the guitar and piano reading poetry and telling jokes a stripping lounge singer a poetry reading an a cappella version of lean on acts and more at the talent show sponsored by the lehigh university choir susan gardner 95,choirmem ber and organizer of the event said the talent show was held to lower traveling expenses for the choir's trip to germany in may the choir has 45 to 50 people and everyone has to pay 500 to tour germany gardner said we are trying to lower their expenses by charging 2 to see the talent show and by selling raffle tickets gardner said the talent show raised about $ 1 50 for the choir the performers were judged by five members of the faculty and staff alex doty associate professor of english cathy riddell assistant director of admissions maurice willis admissions counselor richard weisman associate professor of civil engineering and philip metzger curator for special collections for lehigh li break-ins and a number of other thefts after confessing to police court docu ments said michael mario di paola 24 was arrested on two counts of burglary two counts of theft and two counts of criminal mischief after being questioned by police on march 1 , police reports said di paola was in police custody in northampton county prison on an unrelated charge following his arraignment he was remanded to northampton county prison in his pre hearing on wednesday di paola decided to have all charges heard at northampton county court di paola had been an employee of wood he also admitted to removing a safe worth 300 and which contained 2,808.27 from the university center cafe office feb 15 court documents said the safe was transported to an unknown location where di paola used tools to remove the door of the safe documents said the safe was recovered in salisbury town ship in addition he said he unlawfully entered a dining service which is under contract to provide food to lehigh since january 1992 he was fired before his arrest because he did not show up for work two days in a row said thomas j lambert director of food services lambert said di paola was part of the housekeeping staff technically flawed lipko spoke with steve merin one of the owners of the family busi ness and was able to get the 5 fee dropped he was very gracious and very helpful lipko said the fee was intended to deter students from making petty excuses about their proofs and getting retakes she said the fee was o discourage stu dents from getting frivolous retakes lipkosaid merin studios is work ing with us and they are doing all they can to help us lipko said there were more com plaints this year about the proofs but there has not been a significant in crease in retake numbers whenever there have been com plaints merin studios has been prompt in calling back parents and students lipko said and i'm not inundated with phone calls she said they're going out of their way to help us students were angered by the fee but lipko assured that if students are truly not satisfied with their proofs they will not be charged a new photographer will be used the sec ond time around as well michelle kudesh
