the brothers of delta phi frater nity enjoyed an evening of fine din ing and conversation with the women of the rooney house wednesday the rooney house is a senior citizen home located on the south side of bethlehem just across from e.w fairchild-martindale library on fourth street for the past 1 3 years the brothers of delta phi invite residents of the rooney house to dinner an event like the rooney dinner gives a chance for our fraternity to give something back to the commu nity said andrew levenson 95 president of delta phi we hold this dinner every year and always get a good response from those who take part in the dinner the evening began around 5 p.m as the women were given corsages and escorted up to the fraternity in vans driven by brothers and rented lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 101 no 35 tuesday march 15 1994 the brown and white commencement to take place indoors again all the lehigh news first by annabel lukins news writer dining services defends use of styrofoam during snow emergencies ceremony and then you said oops they're moving it indoors so she's left sitting in the car he said however many students would still rather have graduation outside and deal with the con sequences if it rains mary chaffier 94 said it'd be nice to have it outside because then there would be unlimited seats and you could bring anyone you wanted but i would be scared about the weather i guess if it came down to it i'd just have to have my immediate family see me graduate and send my other relatives to a nice restaurant please see the worst-case scenario i can think of is planning graduation outside and than having it rain becky schultz assistant registrar friends and family but the potential for a disaster in the case of poor weather makes an outdoor graduation ceremony unfavorable said becky schultz assistant registrar the worst-case scenario i can think of is planning graduation outside and then having it rain schultz said if we quickly had to change the venue to inside which lessens the amount of people that can attend how are students going to tell people like their grand parents that they can't come to the main com mencement lehigh president peter likins said in an interview with brown and white editors that he feels strongly that graduation should be held the 1994 graduation ceremonies will once again take place indoors because of concern over bad weather university officials said even though many students want to graduate outside students are allowed only four tickets for the main commencement in stabler arena said barbara tallarico university events coor dinator additional tickets will be available through a lottery system in april on the other hand if the ceremony was held outside in the problems in the kitchen lambert said styrofoam is used when either the conveyors which bring the dishes to the dish room are broken or the dish washing machine itself is broken lambert said this is the first time in six years he can remember using disposable goods because of the weather many students are upset by the use of styrofoam because of its po tential environmental problems most types of styrofoam are not biodegradable which means they will not decompose when they are discarded barbara macneill 97 said from an environmental standpoint i think they should use paper plates even though they are more flimsy allison pirie 97 also feels the use of styrofoam is a waste i think it would be better to find an alterna tive pirie said snow was not the only white stuff students saw during the worst weather of the season as dining services was often forced to use styrofoam plates and cups in the dining halls much to the dismay of some environmentally conscious students while lehigh was forced to can cel classes on a number of occasions the dining halls had to stay open to feed the on-campus residents often understaffed because of the weather the dining services staff who braved the snow and ice were given the more important positions of pre paring and serving food to the stu dents rather than washing dishes said thomas lambert administrative su pervisor of dining services our first priority is to serve the students not wash the dishes lam bert said this is accomplished using disposable goods such as styrofoam dishes and cups and plastic utensils he said from the university's transportation services cocktails gave time for the brothers to talk and get acquainted with their dinner guests as everyone enjoyed punch and hors d'oeuvres some of the guests were was refreshing to see familiar faces still there katherine stimmel an 80-year old resident of the rooney house for 1 1 years said i was here two years ago but didn't come last year and i please see delta page 5 still remember some of the brother s faces it's nice to talk with a younger person especially a student from lehigh i hope to come up again next year the brothers of the fraternity also enjoyed the evening and felt it was not only a community service project but a good chance to meet new people scott harrington 97 a pledge of delta phi felt the dinner served as a good community project and was interesting to meet by being a part of this dinner our guests have a chance to talk to someone of a different age he said and the brothers are given the opportunity to establish relationships with mem bers of the bethlehem community frank klein 95 vice president of delta phi and coordinator of the entire evening raffled off an assort ment of prizes to the dinner guests
