at lehigh it is possible to evaluate where the uni versity stands m its commitment to campus security today people closely connected with lehigh remember a time before door alarms escort services and access cards a time when lehigh perhaps was not so safe as it seemed • • • the clery murder wasn't the beginning of lehigh's security problems donald corriere former district attorney of bethlehem is very familiar with crime at lehigh university his 12 years m office led to many campus cases corriere's son michael was the first of his three children to attend lehigh when he and his wife dropped their 18-year-old son off at the university they were told it was time for the parents to leave because the students were tapping a keg down m the lounge here you have the university promoting in the fall of 1985 freshman jeanne clery of bryn mawr pa enrolled at lehigh to study m the college of arts and science she moved into the third floor of stoughton house m the lower centennials and made many friends she joined the women's tennis team and quickly settled into her new life at college according to her brother ben clery jeanne had been accepted to many schools m part for her tennis playing among the factors for her decision to attend lehigh were the beautiful grounds the short distance away from home and the seemingly safe campus her brothers had attended tulane university la and had warned her of dangerous campuses the new orleans area had become more vio lent over the years a freshman karen minkin had been murdered m 1984 but when the clery family dropped jeanne off on south mountain they didn't know that the tragedy of minkin's death at tulane would be mirrored at lehigh with their daughter's death • • • jeanne clery's murder changed life at lehigh forever after the shock grief mourn ing and anger the university set about chang ing itself since the murder lehigh has spent more than 1 million on campus security and continues to search for ways to make the cam pus safe m a changing society by michelle de mooy news editor finding the value m perspec tive and balance was the common theme m speeches given by general colin powell usa-ret and newly installed dean joan straumanis at thursday's convo cation for the college of arts and sciences the ceremony to inaugurate straumanis was highlighted by powell's 45-minute address introduced by provost al pense who called powell the most distinguished military strategist m the nation powell spoke to alumni faculty and stu dents about his ascent to promi nence m american society i was a very ordinary kid who rose to extraordinary heights powell said i had extraordinary parents who imparted values and expectations on me i had a belief m myself and a belief m america powell also attributed much of his success to new york city a place he considered dedicated to educating the next generation where he was given a free educa tion the city was an example of free enterprise m america he said every youngster needs to have this support from the educa tional system the speech also touched on powell's political ideology and personal experience he mentioned his 28 years as a soldier m the army which includ ed guarding bases m east germany and watching nelson mandela become the first black president of south africa he expressed his gratitude to the military for helping him to achieve success and personal bal ance m a segregated world for a young black man 40 years ago the military was the only way for me to find a place at the top he said i take pride m my decision to join powell said m order to take on the difficulties of modern life americans must remain at the forefront of all aspects of life economically politically and socially americans have no choice but to be leaders powell said because other countries have always trusted our country and that our obligation is to forge new strategies for the problems facing the world there are no solutions to the angst we feel powell said and they
