of arcadia and the university 29 arcadia and faculty members met for dinner at the suacon valley country club thursday nov 3 president whitaker was host arcadians faculty confer cut system deemed success introductory talks by dr whitaker it important topics discussed were kennedy jr joseph d ricapito jr edmund rider ferris saydah f w seebald ned wallace fred wibiralske the margin of victory . . . b&w photo by mcfadden this field goal proved to be the margin of victory as lehigh nipped muhlenberg 22 to 20 saturday shown above is the ball sailing neatly between the crossbars after leaving bernie rosen's 34 toe in the second quarter open discussion followed short and john jordan arcadia preside the possibility of student partici pation on the curriculum commit tee and the success of the unlimit ed cut system both faculty and students ex pressed doubt concerning the abili ty of undergraduates to decide what courses should be required in training for the professions stu dents are given the opportunity of appraising their curricula through the faculty evaluation program commenting on course se quence the faculty members point ed out that the students are free to consult with their curriculum di rectors such practice they agreed would be beneficial dean j d leith reporting on the cut system called the plan generally satisfactory he revealed that approximately half of all cuts are taken by 1 1 per cent of the stu dent body other faculty members present included wray h congdon dean of students charles a seidle as sociate dean of students carl e allen acting director of business administration rev george m bean chaplain prof loyal v bewley director of electrical engi neering also dr herbert m diamond head of the department of eco nomics and sociology arcadia ad viser prof william j eney di rector of civil engineering robert herrick public relations director dr carl keck director of student health service also john i kirkpatrick uni versity treasurer prof robert p more head of the department of german dr harvey a neville director of chemistry and chemical engineering prof everett a teal director of university counseling center other arcadia members in at tendance included robert bond robert courtney j harry dowl ing richard gratton ed halten hoff paul loewenwarter james by el cornogr sports editor the muhlenberg mule supposedly spavined moth-eaten and about due for the glue factory turned out to be its usual stubborn self last saturday as it launched a second half ground and air blitz that fell just three points short of upsetting lehigh's football team in danger to the very end the brown and white held on to nudge the spirited mules 22-20 thereby cop ping their fifth win of the 49 season $ bernie rosen's three points via a field goal were the deciding factor in this rugged exhibition of pigskin bastinado kicking field goals in practice all season long rosen got his first real chance in the second quarter he wasted no time in promptly booting the ball through the uprights from 20 yards out to give lehigh a 16-7 advantage senior quarterback joe scanella playing his last game on taylor field for lehigh scored his first two touchdowns of the season scanella rammed over for lehigh's second and third touchdowns against the mules andy morris scored lehigh's first touchdown of the game when he wheeled from his right end po sition took a handoff from scanel la and swept 14 yards around left end to tally a pair of costly muhlenberg fumbles and a blocked kick set up all lehigh touchdown though the mules blocked a kick also they failed to cash in on this first period break doing almost everythiny the hard way the cardinal and grap was obliged to drive 31 and 28 yards for two of their t.d.s while getting the other on a 67 yard pass play outplayed most of the way lehigh's line failed to give the pro tection usually accorded dick ga briel and dick doyne on running plays or do much about keeping mule linemen from harassing joe scanella on pass plays with its offense off balance the brown and white displayed but brief flashes of the play it's capable of proving tough from the opening kickoff the mules threatened in the first quarter when they blocked dick doyne's quick kick and re covered the ball on lehigh's seven putting up a great defense the brown and white stopped the mules on the one-foot line moments later lehigh repulsed another cardinal and gray drive as england fumbled and dick ga brial recovered on lehigh's two after collin kicked to the 31 the mules came all the way with eng land scoring the touchdopn on an 11 yard foray around right end with muhlenberg leading 7-0 early in the second period dick doyne recovered another cardinal and gray fumble on the mule 31 gabriel churned to the 21 and doyne to the 14 andy morris then scored on an end-around play the conversion was missed giving the mules a 7-3 edge with nine min utes till half time a minute later gus lasasso le high left end blocked a kick veterans who owe the government money will have all or part of their debt de ducted from their gi insurance re bates because veterans overpaid their insurance premiums the agency is due to begin paying of 2,800,000 000 to 16,000,000 veterans about jan 15 on the other hand about 600 000 vets now owe va 70,000,000 because they were overpaid on school allowances pensions and other benefits the agency figures it will collect between 20,000,000 and 30,000,000 by deducting these debts from its insurance bonus payments 100 lu aiee members to visit sunbury steam electric plant approximately 100 students from the lehigrh branch of the american institute of electrical engineers will make an inspection trip of the sunbury steam electric station at sunbury pa saturday nov 12 students wishing to make the trip should sign their names to the list posted on the e.e bulletin board the trip is not limited to members anyone may sign expected to be the largest power plant in the wor?d using pulverized anthracite the sunbury station is located on a 259 acre site purchased by p.p.&l some years ago the plant will have a total capacity of 550,000 kilowatts the first installation with a capacity of 150,000 kilo watts went into service late in 1948 construction expenditures for the first 150,000 kilowatts capa city amounted to 31,000,000 the boiler house is 15 stories high and the stacks soar another 15 stories in the air the boilers are 130 feet high the plant uses 93,000 gallons of water a minute to cool the con densers i ■■— under the supervision of prof w l donaldson e.e department the students will leave by car at 9 a.m and return at 4 p.m m d engle mechanical engi neer and s c townsend electri cal engineer both members of the staff of pennsylvania power and light company in allentown will discuss construction of the sun bury plant at a meeting of the branch at 7:30 p.m wednesday nov 9 the meeting will be held in room 416 packard laboratory and will be illustrated with movies and slides soul body mind one personality says w r webb although the church is pri marily interested in a man's soul it realizes that the soul body and mind are all one personality and cannot be broken into component parts according to dean w r webb of nativity episcopal church bethlehem dean webb speaking before the canterbury club brought out the point that since psychiatry and re ligion are thus related religion may be utilized in reducing the mental tensions which plague peo ple nowadays he warned how ever that some worry is natural and no normal person can avoid it completely the canterbury club will now meet at 5:30 p.m on the first and third wednesdays of every month meetings will be held at the parish house of the nativity church beth lehem they will
