made more reassur ing statements than alarming ones said carole gorney associate journal ism professor journalism department chairman sharon friedman and gorney expressed their disappointment about the coverage during their lec ture risk and radiation media cov erage of chernobyl wednesday in university center room 306 the talk was an analysis of the media coverage by several major u.s newspapers and television networks of radiation emanating from cher nobyl during the accident and wheth er or not radiation coverage had improved since the three mile island incident the newspapers studied were the new york times the philadel phia inquirer the washington post the wall street journal and the allentown morning call the networks were nbc cbs and abc they the media did not do as well as we had hoped friedman said she said the major problem was the media did not provide enough radiation cov erage what they did do was ok but they didn't do cnough-at all friedman and gorney said more radiation coverage is needed since people do not understand radiation and thus fear it more than any other modern technological development they said people want to be able to judge for themselves when they are in danger of radiation in orderto do this they need precise and complete explanations from the media about radiation all too often they said the media used terms like high or low or used vague television graphics to des cribe radiation levels instead of defin ing these levels and explaining if it would harm them they said these terms might have been used by the soviet and eastern european govern ments to avoid panic what gorncy and friedman said they found particularly disappointing was just 31 of the 394 articles they studied explained how different radia tion levels affect human beings there was actually more coverage of the effects of radiation on food and water rather than on people gorney said on the positive side they said more background information on radiation was used in the coverage of chernobyl than in the coverage of three mile see virus page 3 see chernobyl page 3
