the brown and white vol 99n0.10 tuesday october 8 1991 lehigh university increased security patrols cover brodhead vicinity by marc j goldstein brown and white assistant news editor additional patrols have been added to the area surrounding broadhead house where two students were assaulted in separate incidents on sept 28 said eu gene dax university police chief there was a need at the present time to do more surveillance in this area dax said so we are adding until further notice either a policeman or a guard who is assigned to this immediate area dax said there were patrols that walked through this area seven to eight times a night they are there to see things but they are also there to be seen they serve as a deterrent as well dax said however the broadhead area never was targeted previously by university police as a place requiring greater manpower because statistically the most frequent crimes vandalism theft and alcohol vio lations occur on the hill during week ends between midnight and 4 a.m that is where statistics indicate most of the crimes are taking place said john smeaton assistant vice-president for student affairs during the evening hours there are three or four officers on duty as well as four security guards who are assigned to certain areas however there is no way to prevent every incident from happening we try to minimize the likelihood smeaton said in general we have to look at campus as part of society unfortunately we are not protected from all the ills of society smeaton said increased usage of the tracs system and following simple safety rules are the best ways to protect oneself smeaton said we can't just rely on the campus police to provide the safety for the cam pus smeaton said we have to rely on our students faculty and members of the community letting the campus police know when they see something smeaton said it is really a shared responsibility if people think that some one is just going to protect them if they put all the responsibility on someone else they are not fulfilling their individ ual responsibility or obligation after information about the muggings was reported many of the administrative offices and the university police received calls from both students and parents concerned about safety they wanted to know what types of changes are going to be made we don't have to change a whole lot the system is in place smeaton said we will react to particular situations just as chief dax has now and put extra surveillance in that area both smeaton and dax agreed that probably the most underused resource was the tracs transport system i don't think that the lehigh community fully understands or takes advantage of the tracs bus service dax said dax said that in the september the tracs service was used by about 100 people per night the tracs take a ride around campus safely system began in 1988 and contains two vans which run from 8 p.m to 1 a.m sunday through thursday students charge police with
