the brown and white vol 100 no 45 tuesday may 4 1 993 lehigh university forum suspends vote on smoking policy by binoy james news writer in its final meeting of the semester last thursday forum decided that it would not vote on a campus smoking policy until next semester because the issue is too large to be decided m one meeting many forum members support making the campus smoke-free but they did not agree on how the policy should be imple mented forum decided that it was necessary to define smoke-free before discussing enforcement while some members supported a com plete ban on smoking at lehigh both indoors and outdoors others wanted only to ban smoking indoors because it is more likely to bother other people members also complainted about smok ing m the residence halls and during frater nity parties irwin kugelman chairman of civil engi neering spoke about his implementation of a smoke-free environment m fritz labora tory he said the plan had been received enthusiastically by virtually everyone m the department since kugelman has been involved m various environmental studies forum felt his success would provide a base for any forthcoming plans other suggestions included forming a smoking policy committee which would com pile ideas and the logistics of rule-making to literary journal allows students to get creative by tad ehrbar news writer love and despair can be found among the pages of this year's amaranth liter ary magazine recently released to the lehigh community daniel benfield 93 amaranth's editor m chief said the journal covers a wide range of subjects there is some short fiction poetry artwork and photographs he said typically there are not many essays benfield who contributed twopieces has a staff of 17 people ranging from freshmen to seniors the free journal has been published annually since 1977 with the exception of one or two years benfield said it takes the entire academic year to put together he said at the moment it is free but we are considering chang ing that for next year rana taylor 95 treasurer of the magazine said many of the 30 writers who contributed this year are not en glish majors there are engineers involved as well as architecture majors she said we have a wide variety of people involved said taylor who also con tributed a short poem called tommy and andrew taylor's poem is about learning and growing up m society today and dealing with denial and responsibility as with any club the university funds the amaranth staff the staff meets ev ery tuesday during the academic year for up to two hours there are three definitions of the word amaranth including a large ge nus of coarse herbs a mythical flower that never fades and a red azo dye the cover of the magazine shows aied flower with a butterfly flying above it all students are encouraged to sub mit their work taylor said we read them and choose which ones will get m we then hand it back to the student and they return it back to us m the form that they wantitto be printed taylor said other key members of the staff in clude production manager vincent keane 94 and art editor melissa chen 96 the faculty advisor for the magazine is joseph lucia library systems man ager for the university libraries the magazine can be picked up at the two lehigh libraries and m the english department you say you want a revolution â„¢~ jesse jameson a west chester university student drums and sings for lehlgh based green revolution which played at saturday's blrkel avenue block party students survey monocacy creek for potential park by kim culver news writer lehigh s student chapter of the american water resource association began survey ing a 2-mile site of the monocacy creek for the northampton county department ofparks and recreation with hopes that within the next few years it will be opened to the public as a park area the awra began its charter last semes ter while the state has passed the group's bylaws they are awaiting approval from the national headquarters which should arrive soon although the awra consists mainly of graduate students juniors and seniors are welcome to join according to richard weisman associ ate professor of civil engineering and awra's faculty advisor the group needed to adopt a lake or stream m order to be established by nationals weisman said the awra was put m touch with the northampton county depart ment of parks and recreation through vari ous groups such as the monocacy creek watershed association trout unlimited and the wildlands conservancy phil burtner 86 a graduate student and former president of awra said the group created a base map from which the surveyors could map out their studies and students from the civil engineering 1 12 class helped collect data the group's work was ascicntific study see forum page 8 see monocacy page 8 are dangerous chemicals being sprayed on campus page 10
