editor aid to be awarded to most qualified students for incoming freshman class lehigh will no longer guarantee financial aid to prospective students choosing to award financial aid to the most qualified students pat boig director of admissions said lehigh origi nally implemented the guarantee in 1991 to better com pete with other schools lehigh was aiding 25 percent of its students while rival schools like lafayette college were aiding 50 percent of their student body ' there was recognition that we had to do more in the area financial aid in order to be more competitive boig said she said lehigh had a reputation for not placing a lot of money on the table the guarantee helped us change the perception of lehigh being unfriendly boig said it was also used to encourage families of lower income groups to allow their children to apply to lehigh presently lehigh has 50 percent of its students on aid william stanford director of financial aid said the question is whether it is viable to keep the guarantee as such if we are at the point where we are fully competitive with everybody else he said there are more and more needy students even though we have increased the financial aid budget 2 or 3 million a year we almost can't keep a guarantee within the past three years lehigh has increased its financial aid from 1 2 million to 23 million without the financial aid guarantee lehigh will be able to balance its budget boig said it reflects the concern that lehigh does not have a bottomless pit of dollars she said it reflects a need on our part to do the right thing the guarantee caters to those who filed for aid on time once accepted their needs were matched this policy hurt students who filed late because the funds had already been distributed i think we would have more flexibility i think we would be able to look at the strongest applicants we have stanford said we are doing the best possible job we can in getting the right number of students and the highest quality without going over the budget at present it has not been determined whether or not students barely admitted to lehigh would be at a greater risk stanford said we cannot determine before the facts where the knife is going to cut because until all the applicants are on file and all the needs are calculated you are not in a position to know how far you can go on your list and where you have to start looking for tradeoffs returning students will not be affected it is almost wlvr to move transmitter by amy gorman news editor the voice of lehigh will soon be heard
