the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 35 friday march 22 1996 all the lehigh news first gay officer tells truth about army by shari budman assistant news editor colonel margarethe cammermeyer spoke about the history of prejudice in the united states in relation to her being discharged from the army for homosexuality in packard auditorium wednesday night cammermeyer author of serving in silence was removed from the army in 1992 after being under investigation for two and a half years for her sexual orientation after a drawn-out lawsuit cammermeyer was rein stated in 1994 when rules are already in place we tend to take them for granted we tend not to question them until our own rights are infringed upon she said cammermeyer said when the constitution was created it was formed with liberty and justice for all although at the time only six percent of the population was allowed to vote we have been fighting for all these years for others to be included she said i think that it's important to look at where we have been for every group in america there has been some form of discrimination in 1961 cammermeyer entered a nursing program in college and as a way of paying back america she joined the army student nursing program after finishing college she went on active duty she was sent to germany where she met her husband after getting married the two photo courtesy of media relations col cammermeyer calls for further acceptance of homosexuals in the army special ed needs individual focus by kristen chanley assistant news editor barbara bateman professor of special education at the university of oregon conducted a workshop on legal issues in spe cial education at lacocca hall on wednesday the workshop was presented to the assessment in planning course taught by asha jitendra assistant professor of counseling psychology school psychology and special education the class is taken by doctorate students and students pursuing their masters in special education bateman who taught jitendra at the university of oregon con centrated on three main areas of special education concerning the law individualized educational plans leps inclusion and disci pline these topics were arranged into a triangular diagram this diagram depicts the main components of the law bateman said the three stages of special education are evaluation eligibility for the lep program and the place ment of the lep the topic of leps was present ed first and is the most important component bateman said i believe that leps are and b w photo by pete sayer barbara bateman discusses the importance of tailoring special education program to the individual a&s college fights image problem high school students who use college guides to learn about lehigh will read that its college of arts and sciences is not as good as the colleges of business and engineering the 1996 princeton i lehigh i university a i engineering i a college of i business and economics i and a college of arts and sciences by all accounts the first two are excellent while the third is weak the 1996 fiske guide to colleges says the arts college is trying to improve its image on campus - known for being easy this is not true of the upper level courses but since the disciplines are theoretical they are considered soft by engineers and business students and the insider's guide to the colleges says according to students the best depart ments are still in engineering - chemical mechanical and electrical facilities for these departments are excellent and the equipment is up to date the college of arts and sciences is weaker compared to the other two schools but offers several unique programs for interested students reputation is important in attracting col lege applicants clearly lehigh's arts and sci ences college which includes the humanities sciences and social sciences has an image ■problem it is not as clear whether the problem is one bom within the uni versity or if it is generat ed by outsiders whatever the cause the administration wants to change this reputation is there a problem laurence silberstein director of the berman center for jewish studies experi enced culture shock when he first came to teach at lehigh in 1984 silberstein had taught for several years at the university of pennsylvania and also for one year each at haverford and swarthmore colleges teaching at penn was a different experience for silberstein because even though the wharton school of business was gaining popularity at the time he left the role of the humanities was never questioned i was really used to an environment in which the liberal arts dominated silberstein said i found that things could be taken for granted in those other institutions that could not be taken for granted here there seemed to be very little reflection on social values and personal development and a lot of emphasis on career goals here he said i realized this was the mid-1980s but this focus on career goals that was true at other places was true here with a vengeance silberstein said the reputation has improved since he began teaching at lehigh but not enough we have over 50 percent of the students and 50 percent of the faculty but we are still perceived as an engineering school he said i also think it's hard to pin down but there's something about the cultural climate at lehigh that doesn't make study of the human ities worthwhile he said the zoellner arts center will go a long way toward correcting that but we don't have it yet joan straumanis who will officially be installed as dean of the college of arts and sciences at a ceremony thursday said she had no idea until she arrived that the college has an image problem that's a new discovery for me -
