the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 38 friday march 26 1999 all the lehigh news first president farrington dines at sigma chi by keith roberts news writer the brothers of sigma chi fraternity were decked out in sports jackets slacks and ties for a dinner meeting to promote the greek system with lehigh university president gregory c farrington tuesday night sigma chi had requested the presence of the president and numerous other faculty to open the lines of communi cation between the greek system and lehigh's administration the dinner was planned to promote the notion of pub licity concentrated on the positive aspects of greek life here and to let farrington know that sigma chi is willing to help the lehigh community the president of sigma chi erik swords 00 sensed the present nationwide trend of stereotyping fraternities as places that condoned irresponsibility and glorified binge drinking he said he felt dinner was a perfect gesture to extend to the administration of the university to show that the greeks at lehigh are valuable to campus life among the topics the president discussed were the importance of the greek system at lehigh and how alumni often stress that those experiences are what made lehigh so special it is an asset that lehigh looks into itself within its campus to find its value and its life as opposed to a cam pus situated in a large city such as philadelphia or new i b&w photo by lauren lustbader sigma chi vice president dan regalia 01 spoke to president farrington at a dinner hosted by the fraternity tuesday several faculty and staff members attended the dinner to discuss positive aspects of the greek system postman discusses the problems americans face with technology by julie zysman news writer neil postman a professor at moravian college and lehigh university discussed ways in which americans can cope with the age of technology march 22 in packard lab auditorium postman began his lecture by declar ing that theologians academics busi nessmen and lawyers should not worry about any unique problems that will arise while entering the 21st century as a result of the world that is heavily reliant on computers he told the audience that they should put their minds at ease concerning the entrance into the new millennium because the human dilemma is as it always has been he also asserted that the wisdom of the ages will not become irrelevant i have a reputation of being anti technology postman said he continued by saying that he believes being categorically anti-tech nology is stupid we need technology to live as we need food to live he said . however he also said that the ways in which technology is used can be either life enhancing or diminishing postman posed six questions which are designed to help cope with the world of technology he said that these questions can be asked at the per sonal or cultural level the first question postman asked was what is the problem to which this technology is a solution he answered himself by saying he believes some technologies are not solutions to any problem that a normal person encounters he provided the following examples cruise control electric car windows and satellites for television he shared that his options had been decreased by the technological advances included in a honda accord because he could not purchase the car without them the second question whose prob lem is it addresses the fact that one must be very careful in seeing who ben efits and who pays for the technology because they are most often are differ ent people postman used the example that the sst which enables corporate execu tives and movie stars to reach london faster than the 747 does not benefit the average consumer photo courtesy of neil postman neil postman a professor at moravian college and lehigh hosted a lecture on technology monday see dinner page a7 see postman page a7 bhhhbgis2ahhhhii — m hhshh quick ■the softball team panhellenic council how technology on m i v 1 broke its losing streak announced that seven campus continues to by defeating rider 5-4 houses will go dry influence student lives n order t0 maximize the see page al 5 see page a4 see page 81 . chances of having the k y k * k * first baby of the next sports al3-a2o news al-a8 lifestyle 81-b8 millennium one should alison tweedie al6 african music a3 hidden treasure b2 conceive today women's tennis al9 lutv premiere a5 look who's talking b3 baseball a2o martindale scholars a6 face in the crowd b7 source cosmopolitan magazine
