assistant to united nations ' secretary general addresses misconceptions timely issues shashi tharoor special assistant to united nations secretary general kofi annan spoke tuesday night about the united nation's role in the coming millennium the lecture and book reading and signing afterward were sponsored by the global union tharoor began by quoting from dickens using it as a metaphor for the state of the united nations it was the best of times it was the worst of times tharoor said tharoor said his goal for speaking to an american audience is to publicize the extent to which the united nations is involved in everyday life he explained that the united nations has enjoyed an era of unprecedented peace in some countries while others have fallen victim to conflict and poverty tharoor said the organization's goal is to address prob lems without passports problems that can go beyond the capacity of just one government the united nations builds to a common platform a shared sense of values tharoor said we have to do things together because we can't do them separately tharoor took time in his speech to address several myths about the united nations and said there are sev eral complaints such as that the united nations is shashi tharoor special assistant to the united nations secretary general spoke tuesday about several issues the organization is involved with including discussed a broad range of issues that promote wellness and unity at its meeting nov 4 issues covered during the meeting included the success of fundraisers for breast cancer awareness month and dress for success other topics raised during the meeting con cerned plans for its next brown bag lunch pro ject what forward would like to do for national aids day and the portrayal of women in the media it also talked about top ics it would like to raise in its upcoming newsletter which should be in circulation by next semester profits from the organization's next project of raising money for national aids day on dec 1 will be focused on women and children aids victims forward president brianna eiter 00 discussed its next project we are going to try to raise money for aids research for women and children because it is believed that most money for research is used only on males eiter said forward typically discusses issues con cerning women on and off campus we are open to any topics and events that promote gender equality and that offer strength and support to women academically socially professionally and on health and safe ty issues eiter said although this group has accomplished much in its history it is in need of support from students forward treasurer tammy heckman 01 hopes others will take the initiative to find out about the club we would like to see more women on campus involved in our activities heckman said i would like to see the lehigh commu nity have a greater understanding of exactly what forward is the group has high hopes that with a better understanding of forward the tasks it wishes to accomplish and its involvement in many activities and events it will be able to help the females at lehigh through its promo tion and demand for awareness of problems that college women face examples of these issues are sexual assault and eating disorders heckman hopes forward will continue to grow as a group we hope to become a strong network for the women of the lehigh community and to increase involvement in the student body heckman said forward adviser kathy calabrese is pleased with the changes forward has undergone since its inception over the years our goals have broadened and i think presently they are to raise aware ness for issues involving women and to still improve communication among the two gen ders calabrese said heckman pointed out that forward is far from a sexist club forward is interested in engaging in positive issues that are beneficial for every one heckman said we are interested in equality for all people the members of forward also wish to continue the tradition of supporting women and strengthening ties between the genders on campus within the group however the women support each other as well we like to do smaller events as a club also eiter said we have movie night or go out to dinner as a group those kinds of things the members right now are a great group of women who enjoy spending time together discussing issues their lives and things that are happening in the world eiter said for those interested in forward there are several ways to get involved brown bag lunch discussions center on a variety of topics and are either informal discussions formal talks or panel discussions and are held at noon in the university center those who wish to become more involved in forward are welcome and can attend meetings that are held on the first and third thursday of each month meetings are held at the women's networking center in the university center beginning at 6 p.m see tharoor page 7 lm\9 m^m m m mm
