the brown and white i^ehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 06 tuesday september 28 1999 all the lehigh news first respected admired professor dies at 74 by noelia cabrera news writer dr john w vanderhoff 74 an emeritus professor of chemistry at lehigh passed away in his home sept 16 a private ceremony was held at the downing funeral home of bethlehem given by his family including his wife daughter son sisters and grandson vanderhoff graduated from niagra university where he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry he went on to earn a ph.d from the university of buffalo soon after he began working as a research chemist associate scientist and project leader for dow chemicals he stayed with the company for 20 years while employed at dow he was given an assignment to deliberately produce a whole series of sizes of very specific monodisperse latex meaning uniform particle size latexes which at the time were a highly unusual kind of latex through a process called emulsion poly merization dow then decided to make a business of producing different sizes of latex david sudol is the principal research scientist of emulsion polymers at lehigh dr vanderhoff was an extremely cre ative man sudol said after working for dow chemicals vanderhoff joined lehigh in 1970 as a pro fessor of chemistry it was during his teaching years that he took part in an experiment with four other faculty members he was a giant in the field of poly mer colloid and surface chemistry he was also one of the founding members of an international group of people dedicat ed to researching polymer colloids sudol said this group continues to meet at least once a year to discuss and present research incorporating his knowledge of emul sion polymerization vanderhoff came up with not only the idea of producing these tiny latex microspheres but went one step further and thought about making these products in space these highly specialized latexes of smaller size were the first products to ever be made on space shuttles and sold thereafter kurt pfitzer of media communications spoke of vanderhoff s accomplishments the national institute of standards and beatles impersonators rock in baker hall by bevin milavsky news writer hands clapped and feet tapped as nearly 1,000 bodies danced to the music of the beatles as performed by 1964 the tribute in zoellner arts center in baker hall saturday night the show starred mark benson as john lennon gary grimes as paul mccartney jimmy pou as george harrison and greg george who is known to resemble ringo starr as starr the band has been hailed as the most authentic beatles tribute in the world 1964 recreates beatles music from the early 60s the band spent years researching the beatles in order to recreate the proper stage presence they wear vintage costumes sport beatles hairstyles and have mastered the speaking voices of the foursome 1964 has performed on entertainment tonight pm magazine cnn the usa network and the nashville network the band has toured around the world per forming at conceit locales festivals colleges corporate events and conventions highlights of their performances include the 1996 summer olympics in atlanta and the philharmonic hall in liverpool england the readers of campus activities today voted the group best major conceit act and best contemporary act the national association for campus activities voted them contemporary music artists of the year and the canadian association for campus activities voted them campus entertainers of the year the act is the only beatles show band that has a u.s federal court order defining photo courtesy of group h entertainment audience members danced and sang along with the band at the 1964 . . . the tribute show the band impersonated the beatles in baker hall saturday see vanderhoff page 7 see 1964 page 7 mmmmmmmmmmmm cm wmmsmm quick hthe football team comedian mitch fatel cbs viacom merger trv w i defeated princeton had his audience in may create the largest university 31 0 hysterics at ulrich media company a cockroach can live see page 20 see page 4 see page 9 several weeks wlth its k * k * head cut off — it dies sports 14-20 news 1-7 business 9-11 from starvation rugby 16 world news briefs 2 look who's investinglo volleyball 18 mock football game 3 popular stocks 11 r , rta v r .. , . _ source www.sbt.bhmedia.com track 20 drown writer s senes 6
