aztec building on third street is being demolished as part of a bethlehem community recovery program it is being torn down because it was a public safety hazard it was creating problems for the neighbor ing area carl di cello director of community economic development , said the main problem was water leakage from the building onto nearby properties the building which had not been used for a number of years , had holes in the roof and violated building codes it had become so dilapidated that there was no use of restoring it di cello said the aztec building was within the boundaries of the economic re covery program which is attempt ing to improve downtown bethlehem we're interested in moving ahead with renovations di cello said we're looking for new and better uses for these areas by staff employed by the university by instituting a new special retire ment program on may 5 the administration announced the new program to facilitate this downsizing of lehigh staff we decided to offer a new favorable retirement plan said treasurer john woltjen ' we thought it would be a more humane way to say good-bye some of the retirees will have to be replaced but the idea was to downsize lehigh's faculty woltjen said it all comes down the dollar these days unfortunately university faculty are eligible for the new retirement plan if they reach the age of 58 and have concluded at least 1 0 consecutive years of lehigh service by june 1995 we don't know how much this is going to help the budget woltjen said we're going to have to wait and see ... it's going to be an interest ing year eligible faculty had to decide by aug 31 , and with the new program can retire between now and june 30 1995 of the 198 eligible faculty mem bers 124 have accepted the new retirement program a 62-percent turnout this includes 55 teaching staff 19 exempt or administrative person nel and 48 non-exempt staff of the teaching staff the college of arts and science will lose 24 professors the college of engineer ing and applied science will lose 23 the college of business and eco nomics will lose five and the col b&w photo by marc j coldstein the aztec building becomes ancient history as part of the community recovery program the program involves about 50 acres of land bordered by the lehigh river on the north third street bridge on the south and the new street on the east and the hill-to-hill bridges on the west we're only tearing down the buildings which violate the build ing codes and are not of use to renovate di cello said this program helps protect the new investments made in bethlehem namely the new comfort suites at third street and brodhead avenue by tearing down the old build ings which are no longer service able the area can be put to better use according to di cello by robert dellinger news writer alpha chi omega and delta zeta sororities continued their journey around the hill at the start of this semester with each moving into dif ferent greek houses due to the recolonization of sigma chi and alpha chi rho fraternities the two sororities were forced out of their 3-year homes into similar tem porary leases in unoccupied frater nity houses dz has moved from the alpha chi house down to the former resi dence of sigma phi epsilon frater nity which was disbanded two years ago for violations alpha chi has moved to theta delta chi's frater nity house which was vacated last year following the discovery of haz ing violations with the right of these fraterni ties to return to their homes after a four-year hiatus the question of what to do with sorority housing still re mains mark erickson director of student life acknowledged the prob lem and noted the need for change there is no doubt in my mind that we need to come up with a long term
