lehigh university by eric kirchberger news writer see statistics page 5 lehigh university's annual crime statistics shows a slight decrease in both major and minor offenses with an increase in cases of forcible rape the crime numbers for the last three years were published in the jan 28 1992 issue of lehigh week cases of forcible rape went up in 1991 with five offenses being reported according to smeaton three of the cases reported were not committed in 1991 , but were only recently reported one of the two case investigations was later dropped due to a lack of evidence smeaton said as student awareness increases more cases of rape will be reported rather than hidden as in the past cases of assault have dropped steadily with 14 in 1 989 eight in 1990 and six in 1991 motor vehicle theft however increased in 1991 with three cars being stolen only one car theft was reported in the two previous years larceny-theft cases remained relatively consistent with 166 cases reported in 1989 206 in 1990 and 193 in 1991 minor offenses saw similar increases and decreases over the past three years one hundred and fifteen cases of vandalism were reported in 1989 155 in 1990 and only 87 in 1991 drunkenness is on the increase at lehigh according to the report with 48 offenses reported in 1989 63 in 1990 and 84 in 1991 driving under the influence offenses saw a large decrease since 1989 when 46 were reported with 35 in 1990 and 22 in 1991 in a letter to faculty students and staff lehigh president peter likins said the report was developed for police purposes not public relations he said lehigh is committed to student safety adding that each individual must do their part to prevent crimes according to john smeaton assistant vice president of student affairs the most important dimension of the safety awareness program is having students understand that they need to take basic common sense steps including not walking alone at night locking their doors and reporting anyone or news writer a debate about smoking in the university center was thwarted by an extremely small turnout on thursday the debate was part of a student senate campus improvement committee's open discussion only five people were present the senate wants to make apolicy that's fair to make smokers and non-smokers happy said joann giangiulio 92 head of the smoking issue group the committee was prompted to investi gate the smoking issue by a september edi torial in the brown and white which com plained about the amount of smoke in the uc smoking is prohibited only in the uc dining halls people are offended by cigarette smoke according to giangiulio corcoran is trying to establish a wellness center on the second floor of the uc and is afraid the second hand smoke from grace lounge will ruin the effectiveness of the center urbine disagrees smoking in grace lounge should be all right i don't think anybody's going to die in the wellness cen ter i realize it could be uncomfortable but maybe they could shut the door he said the one area overwhelmingly voted to become smoke-free by students was pete's arena where smoking will be prohibited according to giangiulio the most likely scenario which will be implemented in a couple of weeks is that grace lounge , pete s arena and half of the lehigh cafe will be smoke-free all plans will be on a trial basis only where food is being prepared and served giangiulio said friday's meeting was held to discuss the five options based on student input de signed by the student senate the senators handed out surveys to their halls sororities fraternities and off-campus constituents of the 239 returned 200 were from non-smok ers one of the proposals suggests making part of the lehigh cafe and/or grace lounge a non-smoking area
