see gay page 13 bob paris and rod jackson preached tolerance toward alternative lifestyles as part of the 1991-92 visiting lecture series paris a professional bodybuilder and jackson a male model were married in june 1989 we started out pretending we were it takes courage for people to come out because we are not really protected we are trying to change that rod jackson single but to have fulfilled lives we had to come out of the closet they told an audience of approximately 70 people society likes to make you feel that same sex love is different than opposite-sex love but we knew we would never love someone else the way we love each other paris said he always felt like an out sider i never felt comfortable in a guy girl dating situation jackson said he was confused about his identity i was running from some thing and i never knew who i really was at age 23 paris captured the mr uni verse and mr america titles jackson earned degrees in journalism and psy chology and wants to go to law school after his modeling career the two have become spokespersons for successful gay relationships they travel to colleges to speak about human rights and they also have appeared on national television programs including the oprah winfrey show donahue and the joan rivers show the couples main objective was to help people understand that discrimi nating against a homosexual is just as bad as discriminating against a black person talking down to someone of a different race or someone with a different sexual preference is not acceptable behavior in today's society jackson said there are so many negative stereotypes and false percep tions in society we felt it was our respon sibility to end some of that bigotry they stressed that society needs to understand and become sensitized to the by meredith mcgowan brown and white news writer gay couple tells of life experience after coming out vol 99 no.lb recent thefts worry campus police urge security awareness by amy mulligan brown and white news writer a recent increase in the number of thefts in the university center and around campus has many students and university employees concerned last weekend more than 3,000 worth of stereo equipment and compact disks were taken from four rooms in delta chi fraternity since pacing break three thefts were reported in the uc thefts also have occurred in the modern foreign language and biology departments money was stolen from the student activities council desk the gameroom attendant and the department of journalism all in the uc a total of 129 was stolen from three different incidents said uc coordinator carol hill hill said the first theft occurred during pacing reak and the other two thefts occurred within one week of each other the theft from the sac desk occurred on oct 21 and money was taken from the gameroom attendant on oct 28 the attendant walked away for one minute ... and when he turned around the money was gone hill said this has never happened in the nine years since i've been here she said the police are investigating the thefts and security measures have been increased hill said money raised by students tables in the uc will be stored in the safe instead of behind the desk the department of journalism located in the uc basement also reported thefts last week on oct 29 linda lipko department coordinator reported 599 missing from the department's petty cash fund and approximately sl6 of personal money stolen from her locked desk lipko said she was puzzled because selected greeting cards were also missing from a box in her desk i've been in this department for seven years she said and to my knowledge this is the first time any theft occurred which is very bothersome the modern foreign language department in maginnes hall experienced a theft earlier this se mester according to virginia williamson office coordinator the department's videocassette re corder was stolen from a locked seminar room one weekend in september another vcr was stolen from the biology de partment computer room in williams hall some time during pacing break according to bruce har greaves professor of biology see theft page 12 coup de grace b&w photo by jason stanford lu diver angela raima 94 shows her winning form in the meet against holy cross last saturday lehigh won the event see splash on page 16 see parking page 12 ing tickets they have a good chance of getting the fine excused out of 11,877 parking tickets issued during the 1990-9 1 academic year there were 1,416 appeals filed of the appeals 60 percent were either excused or granted according to parking ticket appeals offer offenders hope of beating rap by jeff anewalt brown and white news writer last year lehigh parking services issued 11,877 parking tickets and col lected approximately 110,500 accord ing to margaret pavlinsky parking serv ices assistant but when offenders appeal their park tuesday november 12 1991 the brown and white lehigh university students projects are better by design page 7
