price five cents vol xxviii no 56 lehigh netmen to meet lafayette here another opportunity to down a maroon and white team to-morrow lehigh's one remaining chance to take the honors from lafayette in one spring sport presents itself to morrow afternoon when the netmen of the rival colleges clash on the lehigh courts in the second match of the series last saturday the two teams tied 3 - 3 in the first match on the courts at easton but captain beck is confident that the brown and white racquet-wielders can defeat their rivals on the faster courts to which they are more ac customed the courts used last saturday on college hill were in very poor condition and the lehigh players were badly handicapped mena shumway mitchell and yilsack will probably journey to bethlehem to represent lafayette while captain beck beale church and west will enter the singles with beale and lawton pairing off for lehigh in the second doubles the matches will be started at 3 p m on the varsity courts in front of the physics building since this is the only athletic contest sched uled at lehigh for to-morrow af ternoon the student body should turn out eni masse and cheer the one team that has yet the opportu nity to score a victory over the easton collegians lehigh and lafayette split in tennis the lehigh and lafayette tennis teams divided honors last saturday each team taking three of the six matches played the lebigh net men journeyed to easton with the lehigh ball-tossers and although they did not win the majority of matches they fared a little better than the lehigh nine giving the eastonians as good as they receiv ed however the score might have been decidedly different had the la fayette courts been in any kind of condition to say that they were in very poor shape is hardly an ade quate enough term to express their condition they were nothing but loose dirt and apparently had never been rolled the result was that the ball was practically dead which greatly impeded the playing of the lehigh men who are used to a fast hard-clay court . although wentz was the only one to come through in the singles the lehigh racquet wielders came back strong in the doubles taking both sets the there will be a college meeting next friday morning may 27th at 11 o'clock the purpose of the meeting is to elect assistant mana ger for baseball lacrosse tennis and track and cheerleaders arts and science club hears excellent talks professors palmer and walters give interesting talks to the club those who were not present at the last regular meeting of the arts and science club held in coppee hall last thursday evening missed one of the best meetings of the year elections of officers for the ensu ing year were to be held but due to the small number of upperclass men present it was decided that on ly the president would be chosen j m gonroy 23 was unanimously elected to this position president conroy then introduced the first speaker of the evening professor palmer acting head of the b a department professor palmer read a very interesting paper written by the late professor blake this pa per told of the early life and educa tion of professor blake of which the 1 following is a brief outline he started school iru minnesota and a year later moved to virginia where he was under the instruction of a private tutor his father was a very religious man and required his son to read and study the bible several years later his family mov ed again this time to newark n j here professor blake states he re ceived his niort efficient cdtter.tion leaving high school in his third year he held its final meeting of the year on friday evening may 20th in the physics lecture room the speaker for the evening was prof f v larkin and his topic was looking ahead he said that in his opinion a uni versity should supply its students with clean and comfortable quar ters a well-balanced course of stud ies and good conscientious men as instructors and that in return the student should render service to himself to his fellow students and to the university prof lark in suggested the for mation of a federated engineers society of lehigh university in the near future the object of which was to hold three or four meetings per year at which famous engineers would speak on general engineering topics of interest to all the societies prof larkin emphasized the kn j portance of getting freshmen in ! terested in the work of the various i societies and suggested that they ; be given definite work to do in 1 con junction with the officers he also suggested that the president appoint j a different chairman for each meet | ing and that more students be call ed upon to speak in conclusion i he stated that he hoped that the men would keep up their affiliation with i the a s m e and were served penn falls before lacrosse attack brown and white twelve easily conquers league opponent by score of 5 1 lehigh's twelve climbed another rung of the championship ladder of the southern division by elimina ting the university of pennsylvania lacrosse team 5 goals to 1 on frank lin field last saturday the scores registered by the brown and w t hite stickmen is not indicative of their superiority for they outplayed their opponents in all departments of the game and four hard-luck shots pre vented a larger score e wilson figured prominently in the downfall of the red and blue sending three counters into the net in the first half and displaying ex ceptional stick work-ability in both sessions although getting the jump at the start pennsylvania threw la crosse science to the winds after e wilson scored lehigfa's first goal five minutes after the initial whistle and for the remainder of the game they resorted to stick slash ing and roughness that resulted in their de feat roth teams were penalized frequently but the brown and white stick-wielders held their own in the fracas and maintained a bewildering attack that had the red and blue defense helpless parker kept perm's score low 7 and only permit ted one of a half dozen well-direct ed shots to slide past him in both periods four hard shots from le high sticks barely missed the net clanging against the iron side-post of the goal and rebounding into the field perm started off in flashy form working the ball to lehigh's goal after the first face-off but parker scooped a pretty shot out of danger and maurer carried the ball up to lehigh's attack a hard scrimmage followed around the pennsylvania goal and the shots from the brown and white stickmen went wild un til e wilson by clever stickwork recovered the ball and registered the first score by a long hard shot on the resumption of play perm open ed up with rough tactics and sev eral individual dual games sprung up on franklin field perm man aged to work the ball to the vicini ty of lehigh's goal at times in the first half but a t wilson and emslin kept the red and blue at tack from getting in the danger zone muzdakis and e wilson both in college dance to be held saturday following the lafayette game next saturday the last college dance of the season will be held the committee expects a large crowd including many out-of-town girls who will be here either for the game or bach festival the orchestra will be the best m j the valley the university five this organization composed entire ly of lehigh men has been favor ably received at previous college dances and has furnished melody for some of best fraternity dances of the year they promise an en ! tirely new line of the latest musical . hits and may be counted upon to i be up to their usual high standard lafayette scores second victory in baseball game lehigh scores in fourth on dou bles by captain sava ria and yap good pitching duel runs in seventh and eighth over come lehigh's lead and win 2-1 lehigh lost the second and de ciding game of the series to lafay ette saturday by a score of 2-1 the game was played under ideal weather conditions and due to this and the nature of the game a crowd estimated at close to 5000 was pack ed into the bleachers and grand stand of march field a special train carried the le high rooters and band to easton and the brown and white support ers marched on the field led by the band a few minutes later the la fayette band filed in and the two bands competed during the game in playing popular airs the game was one of the best played and most interesting staged by the old rivals the pitching of carney and lees foiled the oppos ing battlers while the fielding of both teams was errorless both carney and lees were in great form the former yielding three hits for six bases and the latter five hits for an equal number of sacks the control of both pitchers was per fect neither issuing a pass carney has been used very little by lafay ette this year on account of wild nes's but this was not in evidence saturday he had everything a pitcher needs to win lees was al so effective striking out nine men the opening of the game found the first three lehigh batters strik ing out carneyis great speed prov ing deceptive lafayette also went out in order in this inning the i second inning was equally unpro ductive of results but in the third seasholtz made the first hit of the game a single to the box he was stranded when wohibach flew out in the first three innings the le high batters couldn't get the ball out of the mustard & cheese gives excellent variety show show composed of two one act plays and a mu sical act large audience present allison's lad very well pre sented by a strong cast the spring variety show pre sented saturday night in drown hall by the mtfstard and cheese club was a great success from start to finish practically every seat in the house was filled and the large audience thoroughly enjoyed the entire program rood lively music was furnished by an orches tra under the leadership of f j reif 23 which played before the show and also between the acts dur ing the changing of scenes the first act on the program was entitled the lost silk hat and was written by lord dnnsany the plot of the act was very light but nevertheless proved very entertain ing the scene was that of a street in 1 london and the story was about an englishman who had gone out calling on his girl and had an argu ment with her and in bis hasty de parture he left his seemingly im portant piece of headdress in the parlor of the girl's home he real ized his forget fulness as soon as he got outside and determined that he would not leave without it but also determined that he would not re turn for it himself various pass ers-by were asked to go into the house after the hat but each one suspected that something was wrong and would not oblige the english man many amusing reasons were offered by the various passers-by why they would not enter the house after many unsuccessful attempts and much arguing the englishman at last returned himself and the act closed with he and his girl singing a duet in the parlor the part of the englishman was played with great ability by b e rh'oads 23 and the english style of speech and action was performed with perfect naturalness t m switz 22 took the part of the poet in the act and had the characteristic free and flowing speech of a true poet the other characters in the act and those playing them were a laborer r p balderson 23 a clerk f e rraessle 24 a policeman e h gilmour 24 the butler t j draff 24 the setting for the lost silk hat was designed by parke b fraim 09 j h opdycke 23 and f w lewis 23 and the hawaiian quar tette composed the members of the second act which made a big hit along musical lines the quartette opened the act with a typical ha waiian waltz and during the act also rendered several other fine pop continued on page four st paul's society the st paul's society will hold its last meeting of the year in the parish house of the church of the niativity on friday evening may 20th at 7.30 p m the meeting will be held in the form of a smok er and the election of officers for the ensuing year will be held bish op talbot will be present to give a talk all episcopalians are cordial ly invited to attend maroon and white takes track meet little opposition in track events but lehigh makes good show ing in field events on saturday afternoon the le high track team lost an interesting and hard-fought dual meet to the track athletes of lafayette by the score of 7by 2 to 36 the day was ideal for a meet and an enthusiastic crowd was present to witness the events the lafayette runners had little trouble in carrying off the track events but met with much stronger competitors in the field events le coney w t williams and craw ford were the outstanding stars for the lafayette team and scored in all 41 points leconey took first in the 100-yard dash the 440-yard dash and the broad jump waltz and herrington were the high scorers for lehigh the for mer winning the shot-put with a distance of 36 feet w/i inches and the track meet little opposition in track events but lehigh makes good show ing in field events on saturday afternoon the le high track team lost an interesting and hard-fought dual meet to the track athletes of lafayette by the score of 7by 2 to 36 the day was ideal for a meet and an enthusiastic crowd was present to witness the events the lafayette runners had little trouble in carrying off the track events but met with much stronger competitors in the field events le coney w t williams and craw ford were the outstanding stars for the lafayette team and scored in all 41 points leconey took first in the 100-yard dash the 440-yard dash and the broad jump waltz and herrington were the high scorers for lehigh the for mer winning the shot-put with a distance of 36 feet w/i inches and the discus with a distance of 117 feet 1 inch herrington cleared the bar in the high jump at 5 feet 7 inches for lehigh springsteen mc pherson good captain locke and wingate showed up well thi sum miary
