smolansky said sunday speaking to students par ents and faculty at the hillel society bagel brunch smolan sky discussed how both presi dent bush and saddam hussein are handling the present situ ation and the crisis effects on israel smolansky u.s and iraq in mental war bush is waging psychologi cal warfare against saddam hussein the idea being that we will convince him we will go to war if need be smolan sky said he added that hussein's pur pose for psychological warfare is to discourage the united states from going to war against iraq hussein still holds the trump card and that is the hostages he said both the united states and iraq have three options to solve the current crisis smolansky explained the united states options include a total pullout of troops without achieving anything an indefinite stay in the gulf or war if the iraqis don't pull out smolansky said he feels the third option war is the best for the long-term security of the region the removal u.s troops from the gulf advanced 1 million for renewal efforts in the south side business district to the bethlehem economic development corporation's bedc revolving loan fund the renewal is hoped to make the le high community more attractive to retail businesses and prospective lehigh stu dents lehigh's balance sheet boasts sev eral million dollars in liquid assets and lehigh regularly engages in investments outside the university president peter likins said we are indebted to the city of bethlehem for helping us fulfill our educational mission over our 125-year history in return we have tried to serve the local community by sharing our facilities and human re sources and by promoting economic development this is just one way for us to show our appreciation to our neighbors and to be a real part of the city's future he con tinued john woltjen lehigh's vice presi dent of administration and treasurer for the past 13 years commented this loan will serve to forward lehigh's student body in both the short and long-run lehigh's students will appreciate the improved shopping facilities but the new business will also help to attract prospec tivestudents it will make the south side a better place overall he said the loan was made from funds nor mally used for short-term investments and is by no means a gift to the city the money is earning comparable returns to other investments we would have made and the contract was made this is just one way for us to be a real part of the city's future lehigh president peter likins under sound loan criteria woltjen continued we will be receiving regular interest payments from the city through out the life of the loan and the principal will be repaid initially lehigh advanced 1 million to bethlehem's loan fund forsouth side refurbishing once the fund reaches 3 million the university will match 1 for every 2 raised from other sources up to an additional 1 million lehigh loan essentially noted woltjen lehigh will contribute 2 million if the loan fund reaches a total of 6 million funds from other organizations will be packaged to finance large renewal projects on the south side with the lower interest rates offered by the fund developers will be attracted to build or renovate facilities in bethlehem's busi ness community said woltjen the renewal campaign has received much praise from university and city offi cials alike bethlehem mayor ken
