going into its final session next week the product design seminar will again feature a series of lectures and panel discussions the seminar will end with a sum mary of the work covered to date monday aug 8 from 8 a.m to 4.30 p.m a panel discussion will be conducted entitled methods of organizing product development programs monday's panel dis cussion will be followed by a case study on tuesday aug 9 present ed by the ingersoll rand co topic will be case study of design de partment aug 10 benjamin webster a member of the board of directors of the society of industrial de signers will lecture on design businesis procedure which will also include a discussion on alloca tion of design costs webster studied at yale and the university of pennsyl vania and in 1942 was consultant for the office of chief of the ah corps after which he went back into industrial practice he now serves clients in consumer goods transportation packing and mer chandising fields in the past few months he has done work in the telephone and prefabricated hous ing fields , thursday aug 11 has been designated a design project work day as which time design ers from various localities will be gin work on new desgns in various fields two speakers will appear at the seminar friday aug 12 to lecture on the subject design analysis harold van doren pres ident of the society of industrial designers will conduct a lecture in the first portion of the session which begins at 8 a.m and gordon w florian a member of the socie ty of industrial designers will conduct the later session van doren received his degreee from williams college in 1917 and studied art in this country and in france van doren was assistant director of the minneapolis insti tute of arts from 1927-1930 since 1930 he has been active as an in dustrial designer florian studied art at the grand central school of art and the yale school of fine arts he was affiliated with the genera electric company for a number of years where he designed both large and small appliances and indus trial equipment garcia wins luscholarship luis alberto garcia of venezuela has been awarded a scholarship here by the creole pe troleum corporation according to leßoy wilson employee relations manager the scholarship is one of 30 granted by this company to its venezuelan employees or their children at times when no com pany candidates are available these scholarships are granted to young men who have demonstrated out standing ability during their high school studies wlrn to reach off-campus fraternities personnel needed nouncing and sports and business consisting of advertising promo tion and publicity after completion of the installation of three miles of spiral fjour ca^le wlrn campus radio station will be able to put a clear strong signal into all of the on campus living groups and six of the off campus fraternities several other off-campus fraternities are expect ed to request program lines at the start of the fall semester wlrn plans to cover all important sports events and any special events of widespread interest a change in the federal regulations governing amateur radio broad casting will make it possible for wlrn to rebroadcast the pro grams of w3aeq the university short wave amateur station by re broadcasting w3aeq pickups men on lehigh campus will be able to hear on the spot broadcasts of events at places not attainable by telephone wire the wlrn studios located in the basement of drown hall have under gone extensive modification and repairs this summer the buildings and grounds department under the direction of supervising architect andrew h litzenberger have installed in both studios new concrete sub-floors which will later be covered with asphalt tile without the assistance of mr litzenberger and mr farrell we never could have gotten the station in good is-hape for the fall semes ter said chief engineer hal quinn quinn also stated that new re mote amplifiers had been con structed and modifications had been made to caster control consul according to quinn the frequency response of the complete audio system is plus or minus 2 db from 40 to 12,000 cycles per second which is well within the tolorences set by the federal communications commission for commercial broad cast stations wlrn expects to start the fall semester with scheduled broadcasting from 8 p.m until 12 midnight monday through friday nights and from 10 p.m to 2 a.m on saturday nights these regular ly scheduled broadcasts will cover a wide variety of program material and program director paul loew enwarter stated we want to put as much live material as possible on the air each night stating that he was well pleased with the progress to date and in dicating that in the fall additions would be made to the station staff station president hal schwartz berg said with the expanded schedule of activities this 1 fall wlrn will have openings in most departments and staffs the various departments and staffs include engineering which is subdivided into design maintain ance and operation program which has drama news music an wounded gls get more dough 22,000 tunnel underway general campus repairs set construction of a tunnel from packard lab to the admin istration building which will house steam pipes began this week and is expected to be completed next month cost of the project is esti mated at 22,000 pipe lines to and from each building were constructed quite some time ago said edward j farrell assistant superintendent of build ings and grounds but these pipes were merely set in the ground and in recent years they have caused considerable trouble a leak in one of these pipes was difficult to find thus making the construction of a tunnel a necessity according to parrel the new pipe line will be large enough for a man to walk through and inspect the pipes at regular intervals in addition to this construction a conduit will also be built to pres ident whitaker's house the building and grounds representative also stated that con siderable work is being done in dormitories most of this work however was not necessitated by excessive wear and tear but by student vandalism at taylor hall for example two broken windows have been re placed doors which suffered much abuse are now being repaired and all bath rooms and shower rooms are being painted in richards house work has been done to all wash rooms stu dents have been complaining of water seeping through the walls and ceilings in various rooms and as a result of these complaints we have opened all walls in back of the mixing valves and placed a lead sleeve in the opening so the water will run down into the shower stall by doing this we still will be able to determine where the leak is or we can leave the fixture remain indefinitely said farrell along with this operation new ventilators will be placed in the shower room doors and bath rooms will be painted with a new rumac paint special paint used in swimming pools new shades have been put in drinker and richards the drown hall committee has begun work on improving drown hall the committee has also inspect ed the lighting fixtures draperies and furniture in the building and is looking forward to improving any of these which need repairs library sets book record lehigh library history was made this year in that a record 64,488 books were circulated ac cording to james d mack li brarian these books were distributed as follows 8,147 on literature 7,364 on sociology 7,263 on natural sciences 5,944 on useful arts 5 851 on history 1,887 on philoso phy 1,498 on fine arts 839 on general works 768 on religion 478 on philology 2,976 periodicals 270 pamphlets 18,729 reserve books the distribution of phono graph records was a new service instituted this year according to mr mack this practice proved very successful with 2,474 records being circulated federal allotments for disabled veterans and their de pendents amounting to a 112 507,300 a year cost-of-living in crease was shouted through in the house by a 354-to-0 roll call vote this week the passage of this bill will in crease federal allotments by roughly 8.7 per cent for 2,024,100 disabled veterans and 58,000 wid ows of ex-service men the measure was sponsored by chairman john e rankin d miss of the veterans committee who rushed it through over mild protests of the budget bureau the bulk of the increased payments 84,432,000 a year would go to veterans totally dis abled either in peace-time service or in the nation's 1 last three wars another 15,406,300 would be paid to veterans 50 to 60 per cent dis abled monthly payments would range from 15 to 150 depending on the degree of disability the present range is from 13.80 to 139 the measure also would increase pay ments to a widow with one child from 100 to 105 a month and would raise from 15 to 25 a month the allotment allowed for each additional child the bill now goes to the senate where democratic leaders have new course in administration will be added to the air branch roster of the rotc program for men in the arts and business colleges this course will replace the course in transporta tion now being offered the reason for this action said col mulholland was brought about after discovering that arts and business men were not fully prepared to handle the transporta tion end of the program we find that men in these colleges are bet ter suited for administrative work in the pais-t men who applied for air rotc were accepted with out being tested on the course they desired next semester personnel may be subject to testing said lt col mulholland august 3 marked the end of training for some units of the rotc eighteen men returned this week from aberdeen proving ground fourteen men returned from fort meade md and four teen from fort belvoir va a group of 32 men still remain at lowry air force base colo the men received the same type of training as if they were entering service in the course of training the men received ranks such as acting co or regimental com mander buchanan killed in md crash on monday at 4 p.m john g buchanan 49 died in an auto mobile accident near cumberland md returning home from his job as salesman for the buchanan lum ber co buchanan is presumed to have fallen asleep at the wheel before crashing into a tree and de molishing his car no on else was involved
