erickson students debate new closed party posicy by fred woll brown and white news writer recently the campus has been buzzing with rumors con cerning the potential institu tion of a bring-your-own beverage byob policy for fraternity parties in the near future mark erickson dean of stu dents spoke at an informal meeting of concerned stu dents thursday oct 18 to answer the questions regard by joan reed brown and white news writer the community relations depart ment is sponsoring the university's annual freshman parents weekend this weekend although there won't be a football game to attend with mom and dad the university has arranged a busy sched ule of events for parents and students parents weekends are organized to give a better understanding to parents of their child's new life at lehigh to provide this the three individual col leges will hold receptions to introduce the parents to the faculty and curricul um and to allow them to ask questions regarding their child's choice of study a resource fair will introduce par ents to the student groups and univers ity offices on campus and a slide show and discussion will acquaint parents about lehigh student life forty-five minute bus tours will be running all weekend for parents to view high lights of lehigh's campuses at 2 p.m on saturday freshmen can take advantage of their parents check books and cash in on the variety of items being auctioned off at phantom at the auction an event sponsored by the public relations student society of america to raise money for student scholarships and professional development the items range from 20-s4oo in value and include a vcr tickets for the fleetwood mac concert at stabler arena tickets to a jets game tickets for a mets game and dinner for two at mickey mantle's in new york city gift certificates for area restaur ants and flights on eastern airlines also scheduled is evening entertain ment provided by the lehigh univers ity jazz ensemble tonight at moun taintop comedians will perform at the stage door and lehigh's theatre department will present what the butler saw both friday and saturday night the community relations depart ment says that there should be a good executive of the chrylser corporation quoted were comparisons between america now and 10 years ago ten years ago it was the largest creditor owed 170 billion by other countries now it alone owes over 660 billion to other countries ten years ago the united states had a 10 billion trading surplus now it has a 100 billion deficit ten years ago the u.s manufactured 60 percent of the televi sions purchased in this country but now makes only 10 percent we were so strong almost invulnera ble for so long we confuse the past with our future lacocca said lacocca said he is concerned that although the u.s probably will not be suffering a depression comparable to the 20s indications show that things will not be getting better in the near future he said a key deficiency in the u.s compared to its leading competitor jap an is a lack of engineers for every 10 lawyers earning a degree only one engineer graduates in the u.s for every 10 engineers in japan however there is only one lawyer among the industrialized countries u.s students ranks the lowest in science and math scores the u.s has become a we'd have to stop demanding more government than we're willing to pay for lee lacocca chief pur chase insurance for their chapters are suffering from the extremely high insurance rates which result from the high risk involved with large groups of young individuals with access to alcohol as
