vol 98 no 12 tuesday october 23 1990 a&s faculty approves freshman seminars lehigh university by heather pauly brown and white news writer the expanded freshman seminar program was approved yesterday by the faculty of the college of arts and sciences approximately 25 courses for no more than 20 freshman will be offered next fall as a requirement although he supports the program professor of philosophy ralph lindgren expressed fears that the program might lose momentum and cause the college embarrassment similar to the failure of the foreign language requirement in light of this possibility the more than 60 faculty members present approved a friendly amendment to review the program in 2 years professor of physics bob foulks said he is concerned about making the program mandatory because tenured faculty in his department are already committed to introductory courses with freshmen although the physics department has only proposed two seminars he said he fears that if the program flounders the department may be forced to offer more seminars the overall effect is to strengthen freshman year and give the students a times with faculty is not enough said professor of philosophy robert bar nes the faculty passed a proposal for an interdisciplinary major program for east asian studies and after much debate minor changes in the courses for the women's studies minor pro gram a vote on a prosposed reduction of distribution requirements was pos tponed until next month this proposal entails cutting core college requirements from 49 credit hours to 31 greater intellectual choice said dean of the college jim gunton these changes will help improve the ambience and help attract a better arts and science student the proposal to reduce the one credit once-a-week freshman adviso ry course choices and decisions to four meetings in addition to manda tory lectures was sent back to the policy committee for amendments one reason the issue was not passed by the faculty because they expressed concern over only meeting with the students four times in the semester meeting for a maximum of four alumni suggest closed parties see greeks page 6 by jennifer provda brown and white asst news editor a new policy which would eliminate open fraternity parties and replace them with clos ed parties was proposed by the greek alumni council gac at a meeting saturday the proposal calls for closed parties with three invited guests per fraternity member including pledges this would keep the ratio of members to guests at manageable levels according to the gac there will also be limits set on the amount of people that can be in the party room at one time and each house must obtain a permit before throwing a party the plan would require bartenders to be at least 21 years old and be on an approved list of trained individuals the proposal also holds that liability insur ance in the amount of 1 million is required with lehigh university named as an addition al insured the proposal was discussed by the interfrat ernity council panhellenic council and the gac bob robeson assistant dean of students said lehigh is not taking a position on whether or not to have open or closed parties we're trying to support a fraternity's decision we're not putting pressure on the fraternities jeff goldberg 92 ifc vice president said they just want to help us out by giving us something to work with this is for the long-term interest of the chapters said robeson some alumni feel there is a substantial amount of damage and wear and tear due to open parties with open parties said robeson there is a vast number of people attending there is no control over who is there he said the majority of the chapter presidents and officers are probably in favor he said all nationals support closed parties said robeson and the majority of them 20 to 22 percent have mandatory policies for closed parties advocates for the policy said * the people invited are wanted guests they are friends and will have respect for the house and its valuables * if brothers do not want certain people attending the party they will be unable to get in * the houses and property inside and
