sen 91 brooks faure 94 and beth anne guthrie 94 joined students from the university of massachusetts at amherst smith college penn state rutgers and the university of virginia at the protest the rally organized by now oppos ed souter's stance on privacy issues such as the right to abortion and birth control other issues addressed at the rally included souter's positions on affir mative action civil rights separation of church and state violence against women lesbian and gay rights as well as souter's overall judicial phil osophy speakers from among the 38 nation al organizations opposed to souter's tep organizes cancer research contest that we can participate which is how he came up with this unique idea for a fundraiser the fraternity became inter ested in cancer research in part because their twelve year faculty advisor econ omics professor alvin cohen is a cancer survivor himself teople when they think of cancer think of a fatal dis ease and it is not that is hopefully one of the things that we'll be going to try to get across during the campaign that cancer if it's caught early enough is treatable said spatz by amy mulligan brown and white news writer tau epsilon phi fraternity will kick off its first annual fundraiser for cancer research on sunday oct 21 with a parade led by the marching 97 from the top of the hill to the bottom along the way ballot boxes to be used in the fundraiser will be left at each fraternity sorority and dormitory everyone on campus has a chance to be involved with the fundraiser according to sterl ing spatz tep president each organization for a 100 entry fee can enter a candid ate who has at least a 3.25 gpa as an example of an outstand ing scholar from the organiza tion said spatz students will then cast votes to both raise money for the charity and help their candidate win each vote costs 1 and the proceeds of the fundraiser will go to the lehigh valley chapter of the american cancer society a poster in the university center from oct 22 to nov 3 will show each candidate's progress those who do not wish to vote for a specific person but would like to make a contribution may label their ballot envelope indepen dent the first place finisher will receive 1,000 second place 500 and third place 250 in the case that the independent category wins the prize money will go directly to can cer research the
