phisig national ends all pledging of the existing members a well phi sig grand president drury bagwell stated in a letter to lehigh president pet er li kins the concept is not new to the fraternity world and is in fact a return to the values and precepts of all fraternities founding days bagwell said it is pledging that provides the mechanism that allows for hazing activit ies to creep in so often the pledge will allow himself to be put through the hazing because an initiated member holds the threat of blackball ost racizing over him unless he performs the act he continu ed if you remove the mechanism which allows for the threat you will have mem friday september 14 1990 lehigh university the brown and white vol 98 no 3 pa act 101 recycling law takes effect at lu sigma nu joins ranks by beth easley brown and white news writer as pennsylvania's act 101 begins to take effect on lehigh's campus many buildings and dormitories includ ing sigma nu fraternity are getting involved albert h wurth an assistant government professor who teaches politics of environment and natural resources said the law requires that cardboard office paper plastic glass and aluminum cans among other things be recycled sigma nu president tim friedman 91 said his fraternity is working on two different ways of recycling friedman said that first they are recycling glass and aluminum which is picked up with the recyclable material at taylor college second sigma nu will use only paper cups at parties friedman said they have not yet tested the success of paper cups at parties because they are on probation until oct 31 also the fraternity has removed all disposable cups from the house which had previously been used for day-to-day drinking he said friedman says the amount of waste has cut down dramatically and not using disposable cups for regular use is a lot cheaper friedman said a vote for the program passed unanimously with the house members he added should the ifc present us with a good recycling option we'll certainly go along with it interfraternity council community relations chairm an geoff diehl 92 said the ifc was trying to get a recycling truck to pick up the materials but that fell through he said pickup must be done by the local contractor which is through lehigh anyway he added that chi psi and delta tau delta are also invqlved in recycling programs don knowles business manager of facilities services b&w photo by keith rapaport eyes are all pointed upward during rugby practice in saucon field see recycung page 8 them on issues such as scholarship career planning values and ethics alcohol and substance abuse personal financial planning and etiq uette when asked how this has affected rush ramchandran said our open house has gone extremely well so far i foresee no problems in instituting the new program the new program allows for flexibility in our issuing of bids and initiation ramchandran said that lehigh's eight-week rush is well suited for the new pro gram we will just be more care ful with whom we rush and much more careful with whom we give a bid ram chandran said we'll make sure that these people will be dedicated brothers see phi sig page 6 by jennifer provda and joshua feldm an brown and white asst news editors the national grand council of phi sigma kappa fratern ity has abolished its tradition al pledge-associate program the council in a move to eliminate hazing adopted a brotherhood program in which pledges are initiated as brothers within five days after accepting an invitation for membership we're the first at lehigh for this to happen to but we're not going to be the last said dave borden 92 vice presi dent of lehigh's phi sig chap ter it's important that phi sig finds a way to make this work the new program aims to provide for a higher quality undergraduate greek experi ence it calls for not only educating the new members but to continue the education dave bordcn vice president phi sig always been to learn about the house and how to take care of it bagwell's letter also expla ined that members of the house will also attend work shops aimed at educating we're the first at lehigh for this to happen to but we're not going to be the last bers of equal status neither one better than the other phi sig's rush chairman sunil ramchandran 91 said we've never blackballed the object of our pledging has lu brothers foresee no problems with 90 rush inside news two sororities charged with hazing last semester face probation pages 2,3 interim dean of the college of engineering and applied sciences recognizes a need for a more well-rounded engineer in the future page 4 arts & leisure a group of lehigh students reach out to the bethlehem community by befriending retarded children page 13 sports men's ice hockey program recreated after five year absence page 21
