each house various local performers will head the live entertainment throughout the festival highly acclaimed blues guitarist and bethlehem resident mike dugan will start saturday night's performance folk singer and lehigh graduate dave fry of godfrey daniels coffee house and the lehigh band tutch will also be performing touchstone theatre a bethlehem based theater group which has played at the white house and at lincoln center in new york city will be another main attraction local radio station wlev will be broadcasting live from the festival site throughout the festival for those who enjoy carnival rides good amusements of hellertown will be supplying five adult and five children's rides although admission to the festival is free tickets will be sold for the rides a percentage of the money raised from the tickets sold will be given back to the charities and organizations of the southside south side festival comes to life lu merchants join forces in three-day bash by erica crespi bf own and white news writer the first southside alive festival will open on thursday sept 22 at the broughal middle school playing fields at the corner of west packer and brodhead avenues the three-day festival which will be a combination of rides games food and live entertainment is sponsored by the interfraternity council and the panhellenic council along with the southside merchants association these groups worked together for over three years to make this type of event possible the festival will be a celebration of the southside culture and community over the past five years the sma has been trying to revitalize the area and expand awareness of the local cultur al opportunities within the commun ity with lehigh university interac tion between the students and com munity would be vital to the festival the original concept of the festival originated three years ago with an idea from rob ripp a former ifc president and lehigh graduate one of the major goals of this project is to unite the students of lehigh and the people of the southside area we wanted to bring lehigh stu dents oft-campus and working within the community said john saraceno vice president of sma and project chairperson by involving the frater nities and sororities in organizing this festival the sma hopes to attract as many students as possible it's something different and new and it's so close to us " dantette utourette 89 panhet president more than 20 non-profit organiza tions or charities will run all the food and game booths according to panhel president danielle latourette 89 groups such as the southside little league bethlehem public library southside ministries and numerous churches will be involved local bus inesses have donated some of their services to the festival to help make it a success members of the fraternities and sororities will be active participants in the festival as well each house is assigned to a specific organization where they will help run a particular booth or game some fraternities plan beta found not guilty b&w ptioto by oave donahue theta xi pledge doug wool ley stamps the hand of junior kirn b rower 21 evening of sept 2 ai tseia as he was escorting three underage drinkers down the hill the only people on beta's porch were from my house everyone else around was travelling by either going up to chi phi or sigma nu fraternities they were both holding parties that night said lou gugliotta 89 presi dent of beta in his opening statement at the hearing no one would try to break any rules we know we are on social and disciplinary probation he said i saw approximately 15 people on the balcony and 35 people on the porch at beta when i was walking down the hill over half of the people were holding cans of miller genuine draft shupp testified how can shupp escort three people down the hill for underage see beta page 7 by elizabeth turk bf own and white nows writer beta theta pi fraternity was found not guilty of charges of violating its social probation by assistant dean of students mike boyd and the interfrat ernity judicial council at an ljc hear ing thursday this verdict is subject to approval by dean of students john smeaton beta was charged with violating the university code of conduct holding a social function in violation of social probation and holding an unregister ed social function the fraternity had been found guilty of having a social event during new student orientation on sept 2 and received one month social probation and one month disciplinary probation lehigh police lt edward shupp the first siad the festival will be a success it's something different and new and it's so close to us said latourette it also establishes a relationship with the organizations around here for future work with them she added the ifc hopes that their involve ment will create a better image for the greek system within the community according to steve lyons ifc com munity relations chairman the ifc's involvement in this project will tell the community that fraternities are more than just a group to have parties the ifc has also added this event as a part of freshman rush this will bring the freshmen in contact with the brothers of the fraternities by working with them at the festival the sma ifc president jeff eichm an 89 lyons along with latourette and linda emery panhel community relations chairperson have worked hard to put the festival together but both groups agree that it has been worth it the kids put in just as much work as the merchants they're good fun people it's been great working with them said saraceno everyone involved should benefit from the carnival according to sar aceno the merchants will get adver tisement the community will get exposure and the greek
