bloomsburg state college in columbia county last november more than 150 students were arrested during a rock-throwing rampage police said students were angered because police began making arrests for underage drinking about a month later in pittsburgh 116 students were arrested at two carnegie mellon university fraternity houses on charges of underage drinking two weeks later pit tsburgh police arrested 15 duquesne univers ity students on charges of underage drinking at a bar in the city's uptown section the forerunner in the campaign against underage drinking however is the pen nsylvania department of transportation pen ndot penndot's recently inaugurated cam paign against the use of fake ids is aimed at increasing the awareness of fake id users to the possible penalties involved and ultimately decreasing underage drinking and driving the effort has primarily been centered on state schools next year however penndot will concentrate more heavily on private universities said dan mcfadden assistant by kristin upani brown and white news editor three female undergraduates were arrest ed thursday at 11:50 p.m for underage drink ing at uncle manny's bar located at the corner of west seventh street and route 378 police said pennsylvania state police and the beth lehem police challenged everyone in the bar for identification in a raid initiated by the liquor control board in allentown the lcb has more strictly enforced the minimum drinking age law since last july when state police took control of enforcement formerly lcb officials were responsible for enforcing the law according to cpl william hairston of the lcb in allentown i think you're going to see a lot more of that bar raids said officer joe keglovitz of the bethlehem police keglovitz said the police are aware of lehigh's new controlled social policy which might tempt more underage students to try and get into local bars there's not going to be a displacement of underage drinking into the town keglovitz said you can't drink on campus you can't drink in the town we're not going to stand for that the local police does not conduct investiga tions unless it is initiated by the lcb he said election but a poll conducted last week revealed that most lehigh students remain uninformed as to who candididtes are most students could only name three candidates the most widely recognized candidates were vice president george bush former colorado senator gary hart and sen bob dole from kansas presidential candidates republicans democrats george bush bruce babbitt robert dole michea dukakis pierre dupont richard gephardt alexander haig albert gore jack kemp gary hart pat robertson jesse jackson paul simon necessary the procedure could be unmanage able and cost prohibitive it can be expected that many who test negatively might actually be positive due to recent exposure to the aids virus and give a false sense of security to the individual and his or her sexual partners concerning necessary protective behav ior....voluntary testing will be available to those who have been involved in high risk behavior koop's report suggests that aids be address ed at a local level the lehigh valley aids task force was formed by the health bureaus of allentown and bethlehem and the miller memorial blood center in 1985 to fulfill the need described in koop's report sponsored by 29 medical professional soci al service and community organizations the task force is split into four subcommittees two of these the support services and tech nical subcommittees help deal with testing issues the support services subcommittee coordinates all service and support work for aids and aids-related complex arc vic tims including the testing and counseling services throughout the lehigh valley the technical subcommittee reviews the latest technological developments including those relating to aids testing and shares the informa tion with the other subcommittees from the task force's inception until december 1987 37 about 6 percent of the tests have yielded positive results according to mi mi franco nursing director for the beth lehem health bureau and an aids task force member testing sites are located at st luke's hospit see aids page 7 by brian cooke brown and white news writer college students seem to think that they are immune to aids acquired immune deficien cy syndrome according to lachlan peek executive director of the easton red cross chapter a lehigh graduate peek said he was not aware of the aids policies of area colleges and universities but admitted college students would benefit from increased knowledge of testing opportunities in the lehigh valley the scariest populations i have to deal with are the college communities he said an aids task force helps coordinate free testing sites throughout the bethlehem area which have run more than 600 tests since 1985 according to heather ehrlich chairwoman of the task force's technical subcommittee the test results indicate whether the individual has the human immunodeficiency virus which causes the aids condition aids is characterized by a reduction of the body's natural immunity to disease making victims highly susceptible to disease and infections the virus which causes aids is transmitted through sexual contact or by infu sion of infected blood and there is no known cure or preventative vaccine high-risk groups for the condition are intra venous drug-users hemophiliacs homosexual and bisexual males and heterosexuals with multiple partners the united states does not require testing of the average american citizen accordi ng to the surgeon general's report on acquired immune deficiency syndrome by u.s surgeon general everett koop compulsory testing is not the poll was conducted by the brown and white and included random samples of male and female students eighty-six percent knew bush was a candidate while 75 percent named hart and 59 percent had heard of dole i
