men and 145 women accepted their formal bids from frater nities and sororities this formally starts the pledging period for the greek system at lehigh assistant dean of students mike boyd said the additional freshmen this year resulted in a larger outcome of men interested in rush there were 400 bids accepted last year the sororities also saw a similar increase over the 137 bids given out last year most of the houses experienced an increase over last year...although there are still some houses i would like to see get more boyd said generally houses will add one or two addi tional pledges during post-rush period boyd was also pleased with the responsible attitude people displayed this weekend according to him there were no major acci dents or problems involving bid day most of the rushees seemed to wait and weigh their decisions of accepting their bid said dave tratner 90 of phi delta theta fraternity although with 15 pledges we are pleased with this year's rush he added at sigma phi fraternity rush chairman matt leone 90 said the rushees were accepting earlier than lastyear overall rush went really well the guys seemed really interested in the greek system fourteen bids to sigma phi were accepted at sigma nu fraternity the 13 acceptances came fairly early compared to last year commented rogerßetancourt 9o rush chairm an alpha sigma phi fraternity and pi kappa alpha fraternity with 16 and 17 pledges respec tively were also confident with the accept ances so far but both will also post-rush delta gamma sonority's rush chairwoman sophomore stacia horvath said the high turnout of 24 acceptances this year reflects interest in sororities according to jeanne shaffer 88 alpha omicron pi rush chairwoman this year we t00k 22 pledges due to housing limitations we could not take any more with the possible colonization of two new sororities shaffer said it will be possible to accept more woman into the greek system the current system does not allow for more than 300 women who rushed sororities to have that chance if the university approves the plan for the two new sororities there will be no post rush shaffer said post-rush began on saturday but most of the houses will begin actively rushing after the post-rush informational meeting tomorrow in the uc neville lounge at 7:30 p.m lu divestment awareness lags b&w photo by jack schneider assistant dean of week's forum panel debate on divestment another option is selective divest ment which has been adopted by moravian college accordi ng to morav ian's policy the college will not acquire or retain direct security investment or depository accounts from a company rating less than the see divest page 4 any other institution has to ameliorate conditions in south africa some uni versities believe endowments should not become part of the political arena any use of the college as a political instrument to pursue goals that lie outside its educational purpose threa tens its own integrity and effective ness as an educational institution administrative vice president and by mary greczyn brown and white news editor editor's note this is the second part of a series dealing with the divestment issue at lehigh while some lehigh students may still remain ignorant of south african apartheid of those who are informed a lot of them wish the issue would go away according to university chaplain hugh flesher they have to be aware of apartheid and i would say no one would advocate it as being good sophomore dan anders a progressive student alli ance psa member commented but concerning the pros and cons of divest ment i don't think they have any idea what is going on anders said regardless most students are aware that many universities and oth er institutions have divested from companies with holdings in south africa according to flesher while at lehigh the issue is still being debated partly it's because of lehigh's con servative atmosphere at this point flesher explained he said lehigh's board of trustee's shares in this atmo sphere but he characterized them as quite aware of how they can influ ence political power divestment is not always agreed on as the only means that a university or the murder of a female undergrad uate at the university of scranton in scranton pa has shocked students there making them reluctant to go out at night and more cautious when walking around campus as police continue searching for a suspect laureen finn of elizabethtown n.j was beaten doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire early on the morning of dec 11 the 19-year-old's body was found by scranton firefigh ters who were called to the scene by residents who smelled smoke coming from the alley between two off-campus homes an autopsy showed evidence of inju ry including a broken collar bone and broken ribs inflicted before death finn was dead before her body was set on fire police said finn was drinking the scranton undergrad murdered police still seeking suspect night before with friends at o'toole's bar a popular student hang-out near the campus according to witnesses finn was arguing with four men out side the bar at around 2:30 a.m she then went to a party at a student's home and was last seen alone at about 3 a.m apparently on her way home to bradford house one of the univers ity's student apartments capt frank roche of the scranton police who is in charge of the inves tigation said we are pursuing the investigation but are not releasing anything yet students are annoyed that police have not yet made any arrests there were leads but nothing ever
