you look back and ask what were the accomplishments of the junior class officers nothing comes to mind i hope that when you think back to the senior class officers you will think of the many things we did he said incumbent rich rosier said he is running for class president because he cares about his class this is a job i want to do i would like to be an integral part of the senior class so that meeting of the forum and the student senate met march 22 in the university center to elect students and faculty to positions in the newly restructured government the new co-chairmen are jorge segovia a junior industrial engineer ing major who is a gryphon and has served on forum for three years and geological sciences professor char les sclar sophomore robert edwards a mem ber of lambda chi alpha fraternity and rotc was elected as secretary treasurer the student trustee repres entatives are junior brian cooke an interfraternity council member and former news and editorial page editor for the brown and white and junior debbie tsai previously secretary treasurer of the forum the two faculty members who will serve as trustee representatives are director of intramurals and recrea tion gregory shulze a forum member for seven years and a trustee represen tative for the past two years and chemistry professor charles kraihan zel who has taken been active in developing the new student senate constitution in addition to the officer elections the forum social policy committees reported on recent progress the social policy programmming committee chairman david cohen 88 said the committee is planning many new programs as alternatives to the hill he discussed the proposed non-alcoholic on-campus pub the pos sibility of keeping the u.c open later as well as extending twilight pro grams until later in the evening long see forum page 6 more banners to fly by jim stanley brown and white news writer the interfraternity council voted last week to hold the greek week bed race event on the murray h goodman campus april 23 and to add a new event the apache run to bring stu dents up to the hill april 22 it was suggested that the moun taintop campus be considered as an alternative site to saucon valley but other events have already been scheduled there for that saturday however the ifc will try to schedule the races for the top of south mountai n next year the new location will include an obstacle course so the beds must have better maneuverability than in previ ous years the event should be well supported with almost every house entering a bed ifc social chairman tom westdyk 89 said the first annual apache relay will be held at 4 p.m starting at alpha tau omega fraternity and ending in front of theta chi fraternity the event will be sponsored by the ifc the pan hellenic council and the student activities council we wanted to provide an event on friday afternoon on the hill wes tdyk said right now the relay is still in its planning stages but we will definitely have it the foot relay will an extensive campaign may not be needed because interest is high people have already offered to buy banners he said it would be nice to have a few banners spread around our cam pus bolton added director of community relations james harper said he agreed and has been looking into the possibility of hanging lehigh banners on the three flag poles by the fairchild-martindale library mohr said he is happy to see the interaction between lehigh and the south side this is the first tangible effort that shows what is happening here he said local high school students helped make the brackets used to hang the banners which are modeled after the brackets used on temple university banners in downtown philadelphia bethlehem area vocational-techni cal school students made the pole hangers for much less than what temple paid for its hangers said mohr have five stations spread out along the run where participating fraternity and sorority members must complete an entertaining event the group that completes the course first will win . in other business council members discussed plans for the new junior ifc the group which is currently being formed will be comprised of freshmen and may work in conjunc tion with the junior panhel the purpose of the new organiza tion is to familiarize the underclass men with the fraternity system said ifc president jeff eichman 89 this should get more people involved in the committees and more people invol ved overall it will run like the ifc and concentrate on projects of community interest letters will be sent this week to all fraternities explaining that one pledge from each house will partic ipate in the organization the first meeting of the group is tentatively set for this month the junior ifc's first activity will be to raise funds for a south african scholarship fund which will be used to enable two south african college stu dents per year to study at lehigh also discussed at the meeting was the slating of young alumni and freshman parents weekend for oct 22-24 bid day is still set for oct 29 candidates deliver speeches bypamlott brown and white news writer the bethlehem south side merch ants association sma is planning a buy a banner campaign for the streets of bethlehem so lehigh ban ners can hang throughout the south side announcing the university's pres ence this is a college town we know you're here you know you're here and we want everybody to know you're here said thomas mohr sma presi dent and owner of third street emporium the cost of the colorful banners was established last week and will be 150 which includes two separate printings because each banner has two pieces of fabric with a heavy inside lining said mohr also included in the price are the brackets used to hang the banners on feb 11 after a year and a half of planning the university and the sma hung the 12 banners on fourth and new streets on the south side the sma hopes to get the campaign in full swing by next fall so the banners can be hung after the 1988 holiday season mohr said the banners must come down during the holiday season so christmas decorations can be hung the campaign will be promoted in the community and the lehigh alumni bulletin said mohr although anyone can contribute we don't know how we will recognize the givers but we want to mohr said if there are not enough sponsors we will sponsor more if needed he said the sma hopes to decorate the rest of fourth street with the banners and then mohr said he would like to see them hung along the hill-to-hill bridge assistant vice president for uni , versity relations michael bolton said speech centering on teamwork and unity i look at class officers as one team each working toward one com mon goal the class of 1989 roger
