sigma phi epsilon fraternity received disciplinary proba tion last week for having five waterbeds in the house in violation of university policy the house will remain on probation until the beds are removed if the beds are still in the house after the summer the fraternity will go on social probation as well the fraternity had been asked several times to remove the beds assistant dean of students mike boyd said it's the rule one of those things you don't want to spend a lot of time dealing with but if the warnings are ignored long enough you have to take action the rule was formed due to concerns about leakage and stuctural problems resulting from the weight load boyd said though boyd agreed there are some buildings that may be better able to hold waterbeds such as sig ep the policy has been just not to grant exceptions for waterbeds house president tony caciolo 89 said the waterbeds will be out of the house by next semester but he is going to attempt to get the rule changed besides caciolo said president likins has four waterbeds in his house and he won't get rid of his and that's one of the oldest houses on campus four semesters of probation pledge master kathy bohny 89 to one semester of probation and an unnamed member of the sophomore class to a two-semester probation period house president kathleen parker 89 was issued a warning curran said the house was guilty of the charges on error of omissions because of initiation standards theta will also be required to do work with the greek affairs office next year on a pledge education project for the entire campus for its involvment in the activities zeta psi was placed on social probation by the ijc in a closed hearing for the remainder of the present semester and for the fall 1988 semester in separate university hearings zeta psi president jim eisengart 89 was placed on disciplinary probation for one year vice president pat balunis 89 was removed from office and was also issued one year of discipli see zetes page 6 theta zetes on probation by timothy warner brown and white news writer decisions have been handed down during the last two weeks by the university committee on discipline and the interfraternity judici ary council concerning related charges of hazing and sexual harassment involving zeta psi fraternity and kappa alpha theta sorority theta was found guilty of hazing charges stemming from two separate situations according to assistant dean of students terr ence curran the first incident involved a line up held in an area graveyard and the second occurred when theta representatives allowed their pledges to be kidnapped by the brothers of zetes and subjected to another line-up according to curran the zeta psi sexual harassment charge and conviction by the ljc were related to the kidnapping and activities conducted at the line-up perceived to be sexual in nature the ucod sentenced the theta chapter to task force working to revitalize south side brisk wind the members sometimes needed to shout over the rumble of the trucks traveling down fourth street taylor said their goal was to walk about an eight to 10 block area bet ween third and fourth streets they began at the third street emporium owned by mohr we want to get a list of which buildings could use a simple coat of paint or could use more dressing up taylor said we need to dust this area off and for a walking tour of businesses in the area of third and fourth streets the task force was originally creat ed to find and solve problems in the shape and rail division of bethlehem steel corp the city's liason will be james mccarthy the community development director smith and taylor said they agree the committee should be an active group that will produce results both said they want to find solutions so that vacant lots and empty buildings can be filled dilapidated buildings renovat ed parking made convenient the needs of the community met and the south side's image improved the task force's meeting friday was their fourth so far out in the chilly south side relating to the economic development and revitalization of the area smith named nancy taylor publish er of the globe-times as the head of the task force the mayor also appoint ed james harper lehigh's director of community relations tom mohr south side businessman and presi dent of the south side merchants association rev edward dufresne pastor of st peter's lutheran church peg vandoren of the summit montclair-carlton avenue block club and robert gurnitz president of the ifc prepares for new law under 21 smeaton said senior week house openings and summer closings were also discussed at the meeting all fraternity houses will be closed by may 20 at 6:30 p.m if fraternity members want to reopen the house for senior week they may return starting at 9 a.m on june 1 the houses will then close june 5 at 6:30 p.m for the summer individuals requesting to stay in the house during senior week will be asked to sign a statement of responsibility assuming responsibility for the facilities security and operation rush regulations for the fall dry rush were proposed and passed at the meeting penalties ranging from two week to one semester social probation will be imposed to houses in viola tion of the rules freshman may have social and or pledging privileges suspended if they are found guilty of an infringement drinking will have on the future of lehigh's social policies act 31 which becomes law on may 24 has heavy implications for students and the admin istration with respect to their criminal liability in under age drinking violations on university property smeaton said the law could make serving alcoholic bev erages to minors a criminal offense to the fraternity members in control of the house and to the administration and alumni who own the property members of the ifc the administration alumni and lehigh attorneys will meet this summer to discuss the changes that will have to be made in order to
