the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 45 friday may 5 2000 all the lehigh news first police captain promoted to chief of lupd by jessica steinitz news writer ed shupp was appointed permanent chief of the lehigh university police department monday he had been serving as interim chief of police since gene dax retired in august he said his duties as chief of police will be the same as those he per formed as the interim chief according to shupp he will be responsible for managing the depart ment and organizing manpower bud geting and scheduling to create a safe campus environment shupp joined the lupd in 1978 after graduating from the police academy shupp said he chose the campus police force because he enjoyed the college atmosphere i joined the lehigh police department because i enjoyed the environment of the college campus the closeness of the com munity and working with the students faculty and staff here shupp said shupp said he has gained a lot experi ence over the years as a police officer beginning as a patrolman on the force shupp rose through the ranks and became second-in-command a position he held for more than 10 years before becoming the acting department head john smeaton vice provost for student affairs praised shupp in a recent press release he has demonstrated his leadership skills in handling numerous difficult situ ations in the past few years and has done an outstanding job this year directing the police force smeaton said detective sergeant robert bruneio who has worked on the university police force with shupp for 14 years agreed it is a pleasure working with ed because he's comfortable in the position and has a good work ethic bruneio said he's knowledgeable when we go to him with questions and always manages to point us in the right direction according to bruneio shupp pro motes programs involving a collective effort on the part of the bethlehem police community leaders and students as well as the university police bruneio added that shupp maintains a healthy balance of contacts in the com munity supporting him including district attorneys local law enforcement officials and community leaders referring to the explosion in whitaker laboratory over the summer in which shupp was one of the first officers on the scene bruneio said that a police officer's job is moment to moment every day is a new challenge in this job bruneio said one minute you're doing paperwork behind a desk and the next minute you're saving someone from a burning building as chief shupp said he plans to con tinue to keep the university safe by mod ernizing and expanding the police department as the university expands shupp said the key ingredient in safety anywhere is the communication and the annual student life leadership awards honored lehigh students demon strating dedication and hard work to the school monday at the wood dining room of mountaintop campus dean of students sharon basso remarked on the ceremony's importance the awards ceremony provides an opportunity for student leaders who have unselfishly served the university to be recognized and celebrated for their contributions basso said they have all made lehigh a better place by their efforts student senate president timothy shotmeyer 00 presented the student senate leadership award this year the award went to anthony s hillman 01 and katherine g schenderlein 01 the student of the month awards rec ognized students who have contributed to the lehigh community this could involve serving as an officer or committee chair demonstrat ing ongoing contributions to and responsibility in an organization or displaying leadership abilities the recipients included amy walts 00 katherine schenderlein 01 allison mack 01 jennifer o'brien 00 warren engle 02 julia bissell 01 anthony hillman 01 and matthew stalsitz 00 for the months of september october november january february march and april respectively the contribution to student life awards went to 53 graduating seniors who have contributed to the betterment of life at lehigh university this award is based on academic standing as well as showing leadership throughout the community assistant director of residence life barbara hawkins assistant dean of students cheryl ashcroft greek affairs coordinator christopher mulvihill and wellness program coordinator ginger deßias presented the awards the alumni association undergraduate merit award was received by john buchanan,'oo jason clemens 00 and kelly collins 00 honorable mentions went to mark dufresne 00 gregg hilzer 00 bryan perler 00 sujin suwanna 00 and ariadna vazquez 00 buchanan said he became involved in the university for various reasons i was so used to occupying my time in high school with sports buchanan said since i don't play anything at lehigh i needed to do something with my time i think that i also got involved because i wanted to help the greek system this award was presented by barbara turanchick the executive director of the alumni association the goal of this a.ward was to honor seniors who dis played exemplary charactership person ality scholarship and participation in extracurricular activities associate dean of students jennifer volchko presented the service above self award to two students that showed the qual ities of caring for others through their par ticipation in community service activities the two awards went to amnesty lefevre 00 and jenny tsai 00 the student life leadership awards went to five students who had an overall positive
