the black and white friday april 28 2000 vol 107 no 43 all the lehigh news first international bazaar welcomes all cultures by c issabella shields news writer tomorrow will mark the 13th annual international bazaar hosted by the global union the office of international education and more than 20 other student organizations each group will help the lehigh com munity celebrate diversity that is not seen eveiyday on campus the events will take place on the patio between maginnes hall and fairchild-martindale library it's absolutely a wonderful day the immigration specialist and chair person of the bazaar gisela nansteel said president farrington will speak first and then the rest of the afternoon is just a great big mix of people and interaction it's kind of like a little united nations party there will be 15 student-performed acts a fashion show booths with displays and information as well as a wide variety of ethnic foods dj miguel will wrap up the afternoon by encouraging the crowd to learn and participate many different dances eshita bakshi 00 the entertainment chairperson and president of the global union will perform a traditional indian dance kehta he mera dil which means what is my heart saying i am so excited to see the perfor mances of the groups who haven't ever performed before bakshi said this is such a great opportunity for people to show off their culture which is something that is not often done here nansteel explained that different orga nizations participate each year and each bazaar has a different flavor sherry antoine 01 said the african cultural club is sponsoring an african drumming group this year it has been a phenomenal experience getting this group together and finding all of the unknown talent here antoine said drumming allows people to be creative not only with the music but with their hands and their whole bodies when you're drum ming you get taken to a whole new place the group will dress m costumes donated by international students and perform two pieces on a wide variety of drums english graduate student ali richardson wrote and will be performing m one of the pieces not all of the performers wil be dis playing their own cultures nicole rivera 00 vice-president of the global union and a s.a.l.s.a representative wanted to model turkish outfits m the fashion show because she felt it was important to have that culture represent ed even though she is not turkish it's about accepting other cultures not just your own bakshi said a lot of international students come here and pick up many aspects of the american culture so it is nice to see other people reaching out as well brian wright 02 treasurer and presi dent-elect of the global union claims the food is reason enough to attend the bazaar but he hopes students who attend should take with them at least an idea of the different customs and traditions from around the world i hope students realize that this world has a lot to offer and all students have to do is step across their own boundaries wright said bakshi urges all students to come see the diversity that is represented on campus bakshi said just come experience the world it's news writer as the college of business and economics continues to grow m numbers and accolades a number of honors have been bestowed upon it most recently seven members were awarded professorships m the college these chaired professorships which are awards accompanied by compensa tion m a special account can be used for travel research or other areas of professional advancement the two-year eugene and sue mercy professorships which are given to faculty members who have recently received tenure was awarded to marilyn greenstein associate professor of account ing and information systems and robert trent associate professor of management trent a lehigh faculty member since 1993 spoke about his job as a teacher i like to think i'm energetic fairly organized and i like to get the students involved i also try to integrate my research into my teaching trent said trent researches with the supply management global sourcing project for which he travels and studies compa nies m many different locations he is then able to provide his students with information from the business world trent has also been appointed the head of the supply chain management director a new major at lehigh trent said working to coordinate this program has been a time-consuming project he is planning to use his profes sorship to build up his library and also for travel expenses for a presentation he will be making at a conference later this year the magee professorship awarded every three years is given m recogni tion of scholarship teaching and service this award was given to parveen gupta associate professor of accounting gupta began his teaching career at lehigh m 1987 and is well distinguished m many areas he received his masters m business education concentrated m accounting and finance from the university of connecticut he received his doctorate m accounting from pennsylvania state university and m addition he holds a law degree from delhi university m india in 1990 he received the best paper award m the area of international accounting and has also served on several editorial boards of various accounting journals as a teacher his emphasis is on broadening his students writing and language skills i want to make sure the students completely understand the principles and concepts of accounting gupta said m an article on lehigh's webpage therefore i stress writing and speak ing skills m my class larry taylor professor of economics and geraldo vasconcellos associate profes sor of finance and law were awarded the three-year searing professorships presented to offer support for continued teaching for faculty members m the areas of economics and finance vasconcellos's teaching and research have been primarily m the area of international finance in 1994 he was awarded the sue and eugene mercy professorship he has more than 30 publications to his credit covering subjects such as the foreign cur rency markets and privatizations he cur rently
