the br white white ikiu e ris a in?ur?atigk managehm fairchild/martino.u.e libr no.ooba le vol 107 no 18 tuesday november 16 1999 all the lehigh news first mentalist uses mind over matter steve banachek tells audience their names astrological signs by gina montana news writer mentalist steve banachek dazzled an audience in ulrich student center friday night with his psychic abilities banachek is a world-renowned per former who combines psychology verbal and nonverbal communication and a little magic to read people's thoughts banachek continually reminded the audience that what he did was not super natural but the ultimate form of mind over matter for instance banachek was able to determine the audience members full names astrological signs phone numbers and even social security numbers simply by the way they carried themselves banachek also told individual audience members what specific playing card they were thinking of after he had them watch fl<fc jv^/ioto by daniel ben-david mentalist steve banachek combined psychology verbal and nonverbal commu nication and magic in his performance in ulrich student center friday night audience uses imagination during ballet by alexandra goldmacher news writer the masters of 20th century ballet graced the stage of the zoellner arts center with a per formance held in conjunction with the john f kennedy center for the performing arts in washington d.c saturday night approximately 690 people were expected to attend with additional tickets sold at the door the show was composed of five separate unrelated ballets there was no specific plot to any of the per formances the audience members moved by the beauty of the dance and the music were able to create personal plots using the ballet as a foundation to tell their own stories elizabeth mcndenhall 03 enjoyed the ballet and especially liked how the performance became more personalized i just really loved being able to use my imagination with the pieces so they were my own personal stories mcndenhall said the first of the five gentle yet vibrant perfor mances was afternoon of a faun this piece performed by veronica lynn and ben huys was choreographed by jerome robbins the music was composed by claude debussy this piece was followed by romeo and juliet starring philip neal as romeo and christina fagundes as juliet this portion was choreographed by maurice bejart and com posed by hector berlioz during romeo and juliet the company's dynamic use of color and lighting was apparent the stage was aglow with soft blue and rose lighting both romeo and juliet were garbed in white a symbol of innocence and neutrality when the capulets and montagues arrived in wine and forest green they afforded a sharp contrast to the star-crossed lovers death was symbolized by a circle of violent red light sur rounding the fallen men romeo and juliet was followed by the first of two intermissions next came the vivid performance of tzigane starring natalia magnicaballi and philip neal this piece was choreographed by george balanchine the music was composed by maurice ravel this was followed by meditation star ring christina fagundes and ben huys this b aw photo by lindsey fuchs members of various fraternities and sororites danced the night away thursday in lamberton hall at the junior panhel and ifc dance party the party featured dj sloan copeland and was funded by the dean of students the junior ifc and panhel consists of mostly sophomore house representatives chosen during pledging see page 6 see ballet page 9 see mentalist page 9 the national association of broadcasting forbids showing gargling on television source www.ravensclaw.com students use and abuse credit cards without guidance see page 11 business 11-13 stocks to watch 1 1 investments 13 ato fraternity sells crab cakes for a local church sale see page 7 news 1-9 world news briefs 2 russian choir 3 carribean party 4 i y tw 1 back on track the ggtf football team crushes bucknell university 48 -â– v 27 see page 24 j sports briefs 21 swimming 23 jl i volleyball 24
