the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 1 friday september 10 1999 all the lehigh news first guerrero remembered by erika berg assistant news editor sandra guerrero a rising junior who died in a car accident on aug 14 used to dance herself breathless to the tune of ice ice baby at the two person dance parties she and her freshman roommate threw in their dorm room guerrero died from injuries suffered dur ing the car accident at 1 a.m on the hill-to hill bridge on route 378 one could not miss the motivational t shirt which read do something that guerrero wore while exercising at the gym or studying for a final guerrero was a lehigh tour guide and a freshman orientation leader she was close to her devoutly catholic venezuelan family and loved music sung in her native language spanish juliet leopardi 01 admired guerrero her best friend sandra was herself leopardi said she had so much personality and character christine scott 01 guerrero's room mate freshman year recalled her energy she was the most incredible person she had so much energy and she brought out the best in everyone scott said leigh fosberg 01 remembered guerrero as being an honest loyal fun-loving friend who always had a smile according to fosberg guerrero had been driving home from friendly s restaurant where she worked as a waitress no drinking was involved fosberg said it is most likely that she hydroplaned losing control of the car since it was raining and that bridge has had problems with pool ing of water in the past leopardi who was living with guerrero and others during summer session was wor ried when guerrero did not return home from work i called the police i was so worried leopardi said the cops came over and asked me questions like what she was who would skip work on a sunny day just to sit outside and enjoy the weather with a friend according to kristin tedesco 99 a close friend of rodriguez mary butow 99 rodriguez's friend also admired her zeal for life melissa got it if life has one definite meaning melissa knew what it was she had a positive attitude all the time no mat ter what happened butow said melissa was a pillar of strength tedesco commented on rodriguez's thoughtfulness for her friends whenever one of her friends had a birthday rodriguez would call him or her at exactly midnight just to be sure that she was the first person to wish her friend a happy birthday tedesco said the next day one could expect to receive a thoughtful creative homemade card from melissa she made everything by hand and wher ever there was an art museum melissa want ed to be there rodriguez's mother said she loved the artists especially van gogh and renoir her father added rodriguez's trademark was her curly red hair which took her friends four hours to braid when she dressed up as raggedy ann one halloween she was passionate about exotic food especially creme brulee and also enjoyed dining at ethnic restaurants with friends and family chief non-alcohol related activities planned for the year will offer alternatives to the party scene students interested in engaging in non alcohol related activities will find a num ber of new options have started on cam pus this semester stemming from the social policy changes implemented as part of project impact's ongoing effort to curb alcohol abuse at lehigh over the past three years project impact has focused its attention on a three-part effort consisting of program policy and promotion to reduce harmful drinking behavior amongst students project impact is a coalition of stu dents faculty staff and members of the local community working together to envi sion changes and help implement them john smeaton vice provost of student affairs has overseen project impact since its inception he feels the implementation of the policy changes this semester along with programming and promotion will be instrumental in attaining the coalition's ultimate goals ultimately it will be the intermingling of all three thrusts that will have the effect of changing the culture on campus that lends itself to alcohol abuse smeaton said the policy changes are divided into the four categories of increasing non alcohol social events increasing individ ual accountability for alcohol-related vio lations clarifying expectations for behav ior and providing consistent enforcement of university regulations although originally announced last spring the new regulations did not go into effect until this semester in order to encourage organizations to help give students non-alcoholic alterna tives project impact is providing finan cial support to organizations willing to sponsor such events as the policies are put into action we realize that change is hard smeaton said we're doing everything we can to minimize the difficulty of this transition the new noon and moonlight cafe in lamberton hall is sponsored by the dean of students office it gives students a non-alcoholic social activity on friday nights 10 p.m to 2 a.m providing entertainment together with a variety of foods in a coffeehouse setting free shuttle buses are available to transport students to the hoyt movie theater on friday and saturday evenings where they can take advantage of the the ater's discounted student prices playsmart a newsletter published by project impact each semester and the playsmart.org web site also provide stu dents with information about numerous other activities taking place over the next few months both on and off campus maddy eadline project manager of project impact feels student response has been instrumental in the promotion of these new activities this is what students have been telling us they want in terms of more alternatives to a social party scene eadline said these offer more selection and variety besides the new alternatives we are also promoting activities that are already in existence together with these new ones other policy changes now in effect include the presence of event security staff at all social events where alcohol is present and the mandatory availability of non-alcoholic beverages and food as well parents will also be contacted if
