the brown and white vol 106 no 17 friday november 6 1998 all the lehigh news first mtv transforms campus into the real world by ashley arrasmith and elisabeth austin page news writers over 100 lehigh students got the opportunity to audi tion for the real world and road rules during mtv's campus invasion wednesday mtv has been following the band third eye blind to college campuses around the country in order to audi tion students caroline mccarthy casting associate for mtv explained the audition process the 13 finalists between the ages of 18 and 24 as of january will be chosen from over 20,000 applicants elim inated in a seven-round process mccarthy said the real world will be taking place in honolulu hawaii this year while the seven people chosen for road rules will be on the semester at sea program this year on board the s.s explorer campus invasion is sponsored by hyundai at&t intel and old navy each of the sponsors had a tent set up on maginnes lawn with different kinds of interactive activities and dis plays available for the students the activities ranged from a hands-on experimental music station to a skee-ball machine and a wheel of smart sex to educate students about sexually transmitted diseases old navy also offered a 1,000 shopping spree to the student who could come closest to guessing the number of jeans that were stacked in a phone booth john lario of intel entertained students who visited his tent by demonstrating two of his musical inventions the b&w photo by sue barn ak jeff karp '©•, was one of over 100 students to audition for a spot on mtv's road rules and the real world the mtv campus invasion will visit 30 different schools across the country while auditioning students republicans dominate in state election results by heather ignall news writer after all the votes were counted results showed that voters favored republicans this election day in the congressional race republican pat toomey beat democrat roy afflerbach in the state senate republican charles dent beat out democrat glenn solt in the 16th district and democrat lisa boscola beat out republican leonard q gruppo in the 18th district in addition tom ridge was re-elected as governor of the state of pennsylvania one way to stay informed about who is running and other election information is to visit the league of women voters or log onto the website they have constructed frank colon professor of political sci ence hopes students are aware of the ser vices they provide the league of women voters is a neu tral group whose interest is in good govern ment and civic duty colon said they put a great emphasis on getting people to vote and informing them about candidates the league has chapters in allentown easton and bethlehem according to colon recently they have taken on a new activity colon said they are trying to get candidates to stop negative advertising many lehigh students have negative feelings about this advertising jenn zeoli 00 is a political science major who feels more people would vote if changes in bookstore discussed by senate by lynn qualey assistant news editor the student senate met last thursday to discuss possible changes to the university bookstore lisa krause 99 a member of the newly formed bookstore committee spoke to the senate about barnes and noble and other bookstore chains that have offered to take over the bookstore some changes that would take place if the bookstore were taken over would include changes in prices and location with a chance that the bookstore may relocate off-campus senate member mark spedaliere 01 does not think it would be a good idea to move the bookstore off-campus as a freshman it's hard enough with no car to get to the bookstore he said krause said on nov 24 barnes and noble will make a presentation for the bookstore committee with their plans and more details on the proposed takeover krause said this process has already hap pened at boston university and the university of pennsylvania the senate was also concerned with how textbook prices would be affected krause said textbook prices are not controlled by the university but by the bookstore the bookstore would give barnes and noble a contract concerning costs krause also stressed that the bookstore committee will continue to work in the stu dents best interests see vote page 4 see mtv page 4 qfflk approximately two-thirds of the people in the world have never made a phone call source trolls r us http://www sonic net/"erikh/strangefacts html crossroads of knowledge imparts tools for success see page 7 lifestyle 7-14 culture corner 8 astral signs 9 face in the crowd 1 3 a power outage left the campus in the dark for over two hours saturday see page 3 news 1-6 world news briefs 2 halloween concert 3 food court attack 5 the football team will play colgate university saturday pfltj see page 20 sports 15 18-20 women's soccer 18 swimming & diving 1 9 basketball preview 20
