the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 8 tuesday september 30 1997 all the lehigh news first ny philharmonic performs for gala assistant news editor the new york philharmonic performed in baker hall saturday night as part of the inaugural gala for zoellner arts center alumni and guests paid 1,000 for tickets to the event which served to raise money for future performances at the arts center ticketholders were named charter members of the zoellner arts center and will receive various benefits throughout this season includ ing permanent recognition on a plaque in the center's lobby patrons who donated 2,500 or more were also invited to a dinner at stabler arena selected leaders of student organizations were also invited to attend the performance marked the philharmonic's first visit to the lehigh valley since 1921 the evening commenced with a cocktail reception in the lobby which included b&w photo by rey echerarria the new york philharmonic practices for their performance which was held in baker hall as part of the inaugural gala for the zoellner arts center quayle returns to discuss global competition by lisa spitz associate editor the greatest challenge facing the work place is the lack of values said former vice president dan quayle thursday during the latest installment of the ongoing lacocca leadership series we could do a better job by having certain ethical standards starting at the top quayle said we should encourage value discussion quayle addressed many issues thursday in lacocca hall including american com petitiveness in the global economy his son tucker 96 and lehigh quayle said the two major changes in the economy today that have occurred through out the last decade are political and military changes such as the collapse of communism and a recognition in global economy an example he cited is motorolla where 12 years ago 75 percent of revenue came from domestic business but today 65 per cent of business comes from overseas i believe protectionism is wrong from the concept that the global economy is good because it creates more jobs more wealth and better pay for workers quayle said an aspect quayle believes is key to com peting in the global economy is adam smith's theory of government's hands-off policy when time magazine put a computer on the cover of the magazine and said the computer is the change for the future the computer industry took off the driving force in the computer industry quayle said was free flow of ideas and innovation and by and large the government staying out of the process let ideas compete and new ideas will be developed and the good ideas will pre vail in a choice between bureaucracy and markets pick markets not bureaucracy in order to enhance global competitive ness quayle said the united states needs to start with children in elementary school famous voice is heard at zac by natalie cantor assistant news editor the inaugural weekend of the zoellner arts center began friday night with a reading from actor james earl jones in the diamond theater jones read a one-character two-act play leopard by yabo yablonsky he read the part of ernest hemingway who was making a last tape recording about his life before commit ting suicide the diamond theater was filled with alumni and contribu tors each of whom had paid 300 for a ticket to the perfor mance a cocktail reception was held before the reading which began at 8 p.m jones was introduced by president peter likins who jok ingly reminded the audience that he still has four days remain ing in his presidential tenure likins said he was extremely pleased to have seen the zoellner arts center come to fruition during his time as president i have been blessed for 15 years at lehigh likins said but no blessing is a greater source of joy and pride for me than this place jones reading was set at the hemingway homestead in ketchum idaho only a small rug with a desk chair and tape recorder were on the stage the play addressed various events in hemingway's life such as his time in africa and his legendary love of drinking it also referred to his friendship with fellow contemporaries such as f scott and zelda fitzgerald after the reading jones opened up the floor to questions the first question he was asked was what type of performing he enjoys the most i haven't done theatre in a while and i miss it jones said you don't make money when you do theater work but it's for grounding for keeping your feet back on the ground as for his goals and aspirations
