shooting in second half by lehigh attack runs up huge score game hard-fought from the start three homers clouted fine fielding plays sigma chi advanced into the semii-finals of the basketball league last week when they defeated sig mia phi by the score of 22-12 sig ma chi defeated delta phi by a score of 14-8 and delta upsiion 9-8 previous to this but the scores were not reported for records or for publication im the brown and white the rules say that this must be done anid special care should be taken that this is car ried out sigma chi took the lead right at the start and held it all the way through by the splendid shooting of rathibome they were able to hold a lead of 10-6 at the end of the first half luce and carlisle aided in the shooting during the rest of the game and a good score was totaled rathbone led with five two-pointers while luce and r childs came next with three apiece a9 a result of this match there will be only two more games in the league sigma chi will meet psi upsilon in the semi-finals and then the finals will be played between the winner and phi gaimima delta win ner of the lower leg both of these matches should be good contests and a crowd is with the characteristic comedy and jazz while fritz lewis disguised as a member of the fair sex also has some surprises for the audience allison's lad a war story the scene of which is laid during the reign of charles ii will probably be the biggest treat of the evening the story is of a young man whose father has been shot as a coward and who has a tendency to follow the traits of ms father during the act three are accused of breaking parole and the dice are cast to see which one is to be shot the lot falls upon tom win wood alli son's lad played with exception al ability by c h jagel's 22 the closing of the act shows in an in teresting manner that he has not after all followed the footsteps of bis cowardly father another interesting act is en titled the lost silk hlat and is more of a comedy nature the scene is laid in lonidoo and is the story of an englishman who has gome out calling had an argument with his girl and forgotten his hat in his hasty retreat the manner in which he attempts to get it is continued on page three the railroad society held a most successful meeting on friday night when mr samuel e.vauclaini spoke on what particular qualifications a young man should have to be a successful engineer *' mr vau clain who is president of the bald win locomotive works one of the largest if not the largest corpora tion engaged in the building of rail road motive power was accompani ied by the vice-president im charge of operation mr sykes who al'so addressed the meeting the president of the society h j kleine 22 presided and in in troducing mr vauclain spoke of how fortunate the society was in securing a man whose time is as much engaged as mr vauclain's is mr vauolaini spoke in part as fol lows : — • every man is an engineer no matter whether his profession ap pears to be otherwise or not he is in reality an engineer of some kind most engineers of to-day are com ing out of the colleges antd techni cal schools with plenty of knowl edge of a kind but no practical ex perience mr edison is asking the college men who approach him for positions a long list of questions to determine the extent of their edu cation this shows that mr edi son has a lack of confidence in col lege graduates if i was making up a list of questions to determine the fitness of an applicant for a job in our plant it would contain just three they are 1 how many cents in a dollar 2 how many feet in a mile and 3 how many square feet in an acre if a boy could answer these i would know he hlad a mind of his own and could depend upon it that he would find out the rest a boy pool match lehigh's lacrosse team continued on its winning streak when it scored an overwhelmiing victory ov er the rutgers twelve on taylor field l'ast saturday afternoon be fore the largest and most enthusi astic crowd of the season outplay ing the big scarlet team in every department of the game the brown and white stickmen had little diffi culty in sending eleven counters through the net and as easily held their opponents scoreless although the rutgers defense held the lehigh stickmeni to three goals in the first period they fell before the onslaught of the lehigh attack in the second session and before the final whistle coach o'neill had substituted a complete scrub team that continued the battering at the rutgers goal assuming the offense at the ini tial face-off lehigh's attack kept the ball in the vicinity of the visi tors goal for practically the entire game the attack of the scarlet team exhibited poor passing and stickwork during both periods and the few times they gained posses sion of the ball and advanced on lehigh's goal their efforts to score were thwarted by enslin or a t wilson while parker in goal stop ped some pretty shots that appear ed to be sure counters the brown and white defense trio maurer bush and jenness offered strong resistance to any rutgers player en deavoring to pass the center of the field and seldom has ibetter body checking been seen on taylor field than that displayed by these three veterans eddie gonzales started the scor ing in the first half by sending a beautiful long shot by lindsey in less than three minutes of play rutgers retaliated by slipping past lehigh's defense but their endeav ors to get within striking distance were unsuccessful wilson recov ering the ball sent it sailing up the field to lehigh's attack and for sev eral minutes the play was centered in rmidi field jenness by clever dodging carried the ball nearer the scarlet goal and a real battle en sued 1 , but tries for a score by shulz continued expected little trouble state's team was certainly a well-drilled aggregation and although tired by the trip it was the best seen here for some time they showed a smooth working infield a fast but fiekl and good all around play however lehigh matched their performance and showed good baseball with several good plays and some timely hitting the hitting honors were slightly in favor of state with and the committee in charge will in all probability plan for one more dance this season to be held saturday night may 28th in drown hall in case such a dance is held it should prove a big success since the lafayette game is scheduled for the afternoon of the same day and a large num ber of p-uests will no doubt remain for the dance baseball games are scheduled for this afternoon and to-morrow after noon this afternoon new york university will be here instead of a later date as scheduled to morrow afternoon seton hall col lege will visit lehigh with its usual good team both games will start ser by the score of 25-20 and 25-8 the doubles went to rathbone and dyer sigma chi in a rather easy contest by the scores of 25-16 anid 25-8 captain dunkle and werotz sigma phi epsilon represented the
