the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 104 no 14 tuesday october 29 1996 all the lehigh news first by jennifer o'brien news writer weissler describes overseas experience chava weissler associate professor of reli gion studies described her experiences m teaching a yiddish folklore and ethnography course m poland last summer in the lecture presented m maginnes hall on thursday weissler described the miscon ceptions she had had of polish culture i had a set of expectations of poland which turned out to be almost completely false weissler said i imagined a country of gray drab buildings ruled by the principles of stalinism with hostility and little jewish life instead cracow was a colorful and cultur al city and a center of the lively arts she said there was a great interest m jewish history with at least 1 30 books published on the subject each year although she did not encounter many indi viduals of jewish descent weissler spoke of how cracow still reminded her of israel because of its secular activities including a festival which is held m honor of jewish cul ture and functioning synagogues weissler detailed many of the challenges that face students who are growing up as jews m poland and how many turn to services offered by the jewish center for culture m cracow this center according to weissler is working to revive academic assistance by mark filipps news writer sharon basso former assistant dean of student life was recently promoted to asso ciate dean of students she will be responsi ble for supervising programs she previously worked with basso will also organize goals for uni versity judicial affairs multicultural affairs academic support services student develop ment programming and support services for students with learning disabilities a key part of basso's job is m academic support services she spends much of her time with students who are having difficul ties with their classes at least half of the job is students that are struggling academically basso said they will come m and there's been a death m their family they've missed classes for two weeks straight because they've been partying a lot or they have just run into some kind of roadblock and they're really struggling academically basso talks with these students to work out solutions to their problems she discuss es the options and tries to find the best strat egy whether it be to drop a class get tutor ing m a specific area of study or find a more effective study strategy usually peoples fears about what will happen are greater than what really will happen basso said in overseeing university judicial affairs basso explained the decision-making process is often complex especially when she cannot use the regular school guidelines basically what the university judicial affairs office is primarily responsible for and concerned about is the document called speakers promote aids education by kevin schregel news writer t.j sullivan and joel goldman spoke thursday night m packard laboratory auditorium about how aids has affected their lives the program friendship m the age of aids was pre sented to inform students about the aids virus and how to protect themselves sullivan began the lecture by explaining how he and goldman met and began hav ing a relationship during their time at indiana university many years later m 1992 sullivan was surprised to receive a phone call from goldman goldman had called to tell him he had tested posi tive for hiv goldman said after gradua tion he took a job at the national office of his fraternity and everything seemed fine until he began experiencing frequent colds in 1988 goldman went to a doctor who suggested that he have a blood test for hiv he agreed to the test and the results came back negative after he received the results goldman decided to stop drinking alcohol and start making better decisions about his sexual life goldman's colds returned m 1992 so he decided to get retested this time however the test came back positive sullivan did not contract the disease but the experience has encouraged him to learn more about hiv and aids he emphasized the impor tance of making sure that if abstinence is not an option then safer sex should be practiced students felt the lecture brought aids to reality prinda mulpramook 99 said i enjoyed it a lot they got their message across with humor and statistics so stu dents could relate to the talk ronnie brandes 98 said i really appreciated that they talked to the audience at a col lege level so that we could understand what they were try ing to say it was obvious that they had been m our shoes at one time and that made it much easier to listen to what they were saying baw photo
