the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 12 tuesday october 22 1996 all the lehigh news first grant focuses on binge drinking by alicia friel assistant news editor lehigh has received an 821,000 grant from the american medical association and the robert wood johnson foundation that will be used to reduce campus binge drinking according to john smeaton assistant vice president for student affairs high-risk binge drinking needs to be and can be reduced on campus smeaton said smeaton plans to make changes with the help of the grant lehigh and five other uni versities nationwide as well as their surround ing communities have become partners with the ama and the rwjf the new alliances plan to combat binge drinking on college cam puses across the united states each school selected sent in a proposal dis cussing ways the cash award would be used to help reduce abusive campus drinking our proposal mentioned the residential environment report and a partnership with bethlehem township smeaton said i think what we have done so far is impressive and helped us win the award according to smeaton and the ama binge drinking is dangerous not only to the drinker but to also those around the drinker the consequences of binge drinking are a large part of the problem smeaton said roommates victims of sexual assault and those injured in fights are all affected by binge drinkers ama board chairwoman nancy w dickey agrees with smeaton that there are no positive consequences of binge drinking binge drinking is high-risk behavior that disrupts institutions of higher learning endan gers the drinkers and victimizes their fellow students with violence vandalism harassment unplanned and unprotected sex and accidental injury dickey said in a press release alcohol abuse is the number one social dilemma college presidents face today smeaton said president peter likins agrees alcohol abuse is a serious public health issue in society especially for college-age students i applaud the decision to face this issue on college campuses where so many of life's val ues are defined likins said the project will take place over a five-year span the first year will be used as a develop ment year of planning during this year lehigh will receive 100,000 to gather ideas smeaton said the next four years will be used to imple ment and revise all the plans so far lehigh has divided this project into three major categories with the first focus being a campus and community partnership we welcome any input from the lehigh community and the surrounding bethlehem a tribe called quest ignites lower grace by carter wyckoff news writer a tribe called quest and everything almost brought the roof down in lower grace sunday when they played for a sold-out crowd of over 2,200 people the event was sponsored by university productions and students against violence jeff freundlich 98 co-chair of the music committee for university productions said the group was asked to perform at lehigh because of their wide appeal we wanted to bring a large act to lehigh that everyone would know about freundlich said a tribe called quest has four albums and is well-known through out the east coast as a strong rap group the group made its debut in the late 80s sarah director 97 has closely followed the group's success since its first album the tribe has come out with better and better albums every cou ple of years director said everything the opening band has sold over 40,000 cds but this was its first time opening for a tribe called quest both by kathy calogredes news writer a dedication ceremony for packard laboratory's newly ren ovated auditorium and plaza took place oct 11 the auditorium located in the basement of the building was renovated by funds donated by general motors corp and has therefore been named the general motors auditorium some new features of the gm auditorium are air conditioning additional lighting new carpeting and new upholstery the technol ogy has also been improved i think it will add to the way we do our teaching the way we educate our students said harvey stenger dean of the college of engineering and applied science gm has approved a five-year grant of 400,000 a representa tive of gm handed the 1996 con tribution of 80,000 to president peter likins during the packard lab dedication ceremony the plaza in front of the build ing including the new fountain was dedicated to william hittinger 44 former chairman of the board of trustees and john karakash retired dean of the college of engineering and applied science it is now called the hittinger-karakash plaza j richard aronson professor of economics said karakash is extremely deserving of this honor because of his work and time as a dean at lehigh he was an inspiration to all of us aronson said we have all appreciated his good judge ment on all issues inside the engineering college and out jonathan hittinger 97 grand son of william hittinger is excit ed that the renovation and dedica tion of the plaza took place dur ing his time at lehigh it is nice to see that people can be honored for their years of hard service jonathan hittinger said it is also nice to be able to walk by packard lab and be reminded of my grandfather's ser vice to lehigh william hittinger met karakash while working at bell laboratories the two men have collaborated to enrich the educa tion of lehigh students through their main focus of electrical work and engineering the classes of 1969 1973 1975 and 1988 also contributed to the
