the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 26 all the lehigh news first friday february 3 1 995 robinson declares haitians blatantly ignored by clinton by abasia kahn news writer randall robinson spoke in packard auditorium wednesday on how he protested against president clinton's refusal to accept haitian refugees into the united states by fasting for 27 days to understand the present we must understand the past things are always influenced by what they were a long time ago robinson said the haitians are victims today because of the actions of their ances tors approximately 200 years ago they defeated napolean's military after 12 years of fighting to be liber ated from slavery robinson believes race is a major factor when deciding to accept refu gees between 198 1 and 1990 22,940 haitians seeked refugee status only 1 1 were allowed to apply for political asylum the u.s accepted 70 per cent of the soviets and 1 percent from haiti and guatemala the u.s has an incorrect per spective of haitians robinson said haitian americans are the second successful working groups and tra ditionally they are peace-loving people in looking for 150 billion to lower the deficit the u.s cut 13 billion in foreign assistance aimed at africa and latin america robinson said we are giving foreign assis tance to white countries but not to black and brown countries robinson said cubans in south florida were the driving force in clinton's policy to deny refugee to haitians because he covets florida's electoral vote cubans do not want haitian refu gees in south florida because cuban refugees can get citizenship within a year robinson said kevin chapman assistant direc tor of admissions believes the inter vention of haiti by the u.s or the united nations will be useless at present i think haiti is not prepared to rule itself and i base this on most african countries who have gained independence chapman said i think this lecture was really interesting meghan campbell a student at allentown college said it helped me realize that every one should know what is going on in the world campbell said tucker quayle 96 announced two of the many awards robinson received the first award he received was the martin luther king jr distin guished service and humanitarian awards and thecongressional black caucus humanitarian award bawi>hoii by rebecca murpiiey randall robinson tells his story on why he fasted for 27 days sororities lose rushees due to new quota policy by dianne shelton news writer although many women at lehigh were pleased with the results of formal sorority rush there were many women who were left discour aged and unhappy while the number of undergraduate women participating in formal rush increased from last year the number of women who actually re ceived a bid decreased jennifer volchko associate dean of stu dent life said that in 1994 282 women regis tered for rush but only 262 women actually began the rush process this year 322 women registered for rush 17 were ineligible and 305 women actually rushed but the rush results are puzzling there were more rushees this year yet fewer women received a bid only 171 women received bids as corn pared to 176 women last year last spring 13 women did not receive any bid and 63 women withdrew at some point during the rush pro cess but in 1995 19 women did not re ceive bids and 115 withdrew according to volchko this years quota was set at 26 meaning that each sorority could offer bids to 26 women this number is reached by using an equation taking into account the number of women rushing and the number of sororities on campus five of lehigh s sororities reached quota in 1995 compared to seven in 1994 compared to other years there were more unhappy faces among freshmen than ever before cheryl smith 95 rho chi but volchko said it is the rushees decision that determines the fate of the rush results if you look at formal rush system-wide we had 208 spots in the so 1 rorities only 1 7 1 spots were filled we had many women this year who focused on only one sorority and withdrew when they were not invited back volchko said if your goal was to be in the greek system there was a place for you when you ijcome selective it s beyond jr control we had women gning withdrawal cards " """**" who had gotten six of eight invitations back because they didn't get the one in particular that they wanted she said panhellenic rush counselors known as rho chis also noticed this trend rho chi kim valensi 95 said it was disappointing be cause a lot of girls seemed to have precon ceived notions about certain houses and made rash decisions early on in the end it didn't work out for them rho chi cheryl smith 95 said com pared to other years there were more unhappy faces among the freshmen than ever before the large number of rushees also forced the sororities to cut more women in the first round of rush than in previous years volchko said panhel and greek affairs informed the sorori ties how many women they must cut each round based on their previous years return rate the rate at which rushees accept a sorority s invitation for the next round volchko said those sororities with a good by peter sorkin assistant news editor senate shifts funding technique on tuesday the student senate passed and proposed new resolu tions one of which was the alloca tion of additional funds for clubs on campus publicity member colleen clark and senate president kevin chick proposed that $ 1,400 be reallocated for the purpose of extending the hours of taylor gym and the libraries the library/late night study will take place on selected weekend nights during the spring semester the residence halls associa tion sponsored a similar event last semester a well as two weeks ago and the turnout was good clark said so kevin and i thought that keep ing the libraries and the gym open later would be a great alternative to the hill she said another resolution proposal is converting lamberton hall to an on campus pub after the music depart ment is moved to the zoellner arts center which will begin construe tion in the fall of 97 funds were also allocated to the pie-law society the snowboarding club students active in volunteerism men and women's rugby men's volleyball men's rugby black students union and spanish and latin american stu dent association the ultimate frisbee club re quested 50dollars but was rejected a debate broke out concerning the ski team and its request for addi please see rushees page 5 please see senate page 5
