the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 101 no 1 friday september 10 1993 all the lehigh news first likins unveils strategic plan by marc j goldstein editor and chief and lori a montemurro associate editor the 1993-94 academic year will be known as a year of necessary change if lehigh president peter likins has any input likins draft of the lehigh plan a 393-page docu ment released tuesday outlines likins proposed structural and eco nomic changes for the university the plan was written by likins in response to requests from both the lehigh board of trustees and the goals and priorities board to design a new strategic plan for the university re sults from studies the gap board and several task forces conducted last spring are also included in this first draft the last time such a plan was developed and implemented was 1984 the fundamental purpose behind the draft according to likins is to relieve much of the pressure that changing economic times have placed on the university and to guide the university through the indefinite future the costs that we experience not we lehigh but we in higher edu cation in educating young people continue to grow more rapidly than the norms of society let's say more rapidly than the consumer price in dex likins said we realize that the costs of providing education have driven the price of tuition to scottpatterson ' 96 was the victim of a fatal automo bile accident earlier this summer near his home in malvern pa according to willistown police patterson apparently lost control of his car and hit a tree in the early morning of july 16 he died later at a local hospital of injuries sustained in the accident a police investigation concluded that patterson was not under the in fluence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident it doesn't appear that speed was a factor either we believe that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel said willistown police lt hugh photo courtesy of lehigh swimming scott patterson 96 bookstore closes on busiest day by david mederrick news editor a malfunction with the registers that was never pinpointed forced the lehigh bookstore to shutdown on one of its busiest days of the year last tuesday aug 31 , causing inconve nience for students and a likely drop in bookstore sales according to robert bell direc tor of the bookstore the point of sales system crash was the result of either the old age of the system which was installed in 1986 or simply a hard disk error possibly caused by the day's tremendous heat and large amount of customers the master unit of the point of sales unit manages more than 18,000 charge accounts that is quite a load with approximately 2 000 customers a day bell said the bookstore remained closed until 3 15 p.m the next day where a limited number of customers were allowed entrance and sales were made on a pos bypassed register at 6 is p.m the disk was diagnosed as clean reloaded and regular sales resumed the effect the system collapse had upon bookstore sales cannot be fully judged until later this month immediate records indicate that the system collapse will definitely affect sales but we will have to wait and see to be sure bell said students who were in the book store at the time of the system collapse taylor face-lift nearly complete by mike haines assistant science editor second phase of construction to be finished by mid-september taylor gym underwent renova tions this summer resulting in amuch brighter building with a fitness cen ter that will have a greater capacity according to richar benner manager of facilities services work began on the gym in may and will be completed by the end of september once the fitness center is re opened students who use it will no tice a tremendous difference in the way it looks one of the biggest changes in the renovated fitness center is that it will have a second level people will be able to enter the center through the lobby of taylor gym rather than having to go downstairs as they did before another benefit of the second level is that the floor space of the fitness center has been greatly in creased the fitness center will now be able to hold more equipment and more people than it did before benner said it could get quite crowded in there improving the center's aesthet ics was also a big part of the renova tions now it doesn't looklike an old gym he said the lobby of taylor gym has also been redone when it is completed it will fea ture new lighting and a permanent reception desk instead of a table with a cloth on it according to benner more glass has also been added in order to let more light into the building i don t want to say too much and let the cat out of the bag but i think people will be pleased benner said another change in the gym is that the four former volleyball courts upstairs were changed to two squash courts and two racquet ball courts benner also said there is a central point where people can check into and out of the courts one of the less obvious changes in the gym is that some safety fea tures in the building have been im proved many of these were put in during the last phase of modifications benner noted that the gym is open now except for the lobby and the fitness center the temporary entrance to tay lor gym is next to the lower cen tennials parking lot the lobby is about
