the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 104 no 01 friday september 6 1996 all the lehigh news first by sarah zabrenski editor in chief changes made to res life policies the residential environment report which was passed by the lehigh board of trustees m january 1 996 is now m its implementation phase of development the report which involves the new greek review process housing changes and social policies has sparked a great deal of controversy among students faculty parents and alumni this fall an implementation report detailing the changes has been released focusing primarily on the new greek review process the review process is based on a point system for greek organiza tions allotting points for academics participation membership behavior active oversight housing and facilities and finances and a 20 point bonus for an approved live-in adviser houses are eligible for a total of 100 points mark erickson dean of students said the implementation report is a way of engaging a broader group of students and faculty m the new changes and to provide a greater understanding of the process of change we identify all the things that need to happen erickson said."we set up all these different committees to look at how we're going to get from where we are now to where we need to be the residential environment report implementation deals pre dominantly with a lot of unanswered questions that relate to the greek review process because that seemed to raise the most questions he said we sent it out to presidents of houses as well as their alumni advisers and faculty advisers so as we start out the fall semester everybody understands what's going on according to the greek review process all greek organizations will be evaluated each semester based on the number of points each house receives a minimum of 70 points is required for a passing grade and any house with a score below the minimum standard will lose the right to hold social events with alcohol for one semester houses that fail to maintain a yearly point total above the minimum for two consecutive years will lose their housing and university privileges john smeaton has recently announced retirement plans which will go into effect january 1997 pense first came to lehigh m 1957 as a graduate student he then progressed to be a teacher's assistant m 1960 and joined the fac ulty m 1962 after completing his doctoral stud ies pense served as a dean m the college of engineering and applied science before he became provost m 1990 the provost is a vice president whose duties include overseeing teaching and research activ ity as well as student services the provost has an impact on the curriculum but does not tell the faculty what to teach a provost influences by persuasion rather than by command pense said although pense is leaving he said he is not detaching himself from lehigh pense plans to remain a consultant and will continue assisting m research work moreover he plans to revise a textbook i will still be around i have just changed my role pense said some people might be surprised by my retirement but they've been basically understood i never thought i would do this type of job for 20 years it seems to be the right time vice provost patti ota has worked with pense since the early 1980s when they were both deans m the college of engineering and applied science although news of pense s retirement plans were not surprising to ota she said she will miss working with him he is a caring compassionate individual he cares about the university and the students pass away in summer by jennifer everett news editor two lehigh students wade hampton stallard jj.l 98 and manish narayan unexpectedly died over the summer stallard died from head injuries sus tained when he fell off a roof july 28 and narayan was killed m an automobile acci dent on his way home from the olympics m atlanta another lehigh student who was m the car with narayan was injured stallard a second-semester sophomore from berwyn pa was a student m the college of business and economics narayan a native of india was a ph.d stu dent m materials science stallard took last semester off and was going to return this fall to live with shane marquess 98 and steve reeves 98 basically i thought it was shocking reeves said i have never had somebody so close to me die he was only 20 years old it was crazy i mean we were expecting to room with him and have a great year but i guess things just didn't work out that way narayan had begun working with helen chan director of the ceramics research lab at the beginning of the summer if you ask people m the materials science department they will say he had a friendly relaxed and outgoing manner about him chan said another part of the tragedy is that he had just started his research and was doing so well president peter likins said that the impact of losing a students is tremendous any time a lehigh student loses his or her life we feel a special sense of tragedy and loss because we expect every student to be preparing for his or her future likins said it is shocking to realize the fragility of that expectation see
