the brown and white vol 99 no 41 tuesday april 7 1992 lehigh university student assaulted while helping woman the assailant returns with friend to assault and taunt two students by aries keck assistant news writer a lehigh graduate student was assaulted and another threatened saturday night when they came to the aid of a woman being attacked at the intersection of fillmore and east morton streets near cr's friendly market said bethlehem police the graduate students were walking to cr's at approximately 10:45 p.m when they saw a man assaulting a woman the police report said the man was punching and throwing the female against a wall accord ing to the reports the students intervened verbally the m an let the woman go and punched one of the graduate students in the face before fleeing the scene police said the woman ran away after being released the students began to walk back up fillmore and approximately 30 seconds later the man returned with another man and both began to yell at the students asking them if they wanted to fight one of the students said when the students ignored the comments the two men continued to taunt both parties and then attempted to assault them according to the student the assailant punched him and took a swing at the other student i would commend our two students who felt the personal and civic respon sibility to intervene to stop a problem john smeaton assistant vice president student affairs then the first man asked the assaulted student if he wanted to be shot and pulled at his jacket police said the man's jacket was open but the student told police that he never saw a weapon the two men then ran away in the direc tion of cr's the student went to leon's bar on east fifth street and was taken to st luke's hospital for injuries to his mouth and face the police describe the first man as a 18 to 20-year-old black man 6 feet 3 inches tall and about 2 10 pounds he was clean-shaven and had two earrings in his right ear and one in his left he was wearing dark pants and a jacket a baseball hat and high top sneakers the second man was described as an 18 twelve busted for network chain letter by jiten rana news writer twelve lehigh students lost their network privileges last week for sending chain letters over the university computer network the sending of chain letters is a felony offense carrying a possible fine of up to $ 1 5 000 said timothy foley , associate director of the computing center chain letters are a serious problem because they create a lot of traffic on the computers foley said we can end up having thousands of letters flooding the system and such a flood can cause the system to breakdown foley said the students problem is doubled because the chain letters were obscene the chain letter was titled with sex all things are possible if the letter recipient did not pass it on the chain warned he or she would have sex-related problems the letter stated you will experience great sex within four days of receiving this letter provided you send it on the letter vividly described the sexual rewards the sender would receive if they sent the letter to 20 people it also described various sexual problems of those who did not send the letter on any chain letter whether obscene or not is illegal mainly because there are too many letters foley said many letters have threats in them such as if you send the letter then you will get five million dollars and if you don't then you will lose your house he said according to foley faculty and students alike complained about the chain letter a lot of people don't like receiving junk mail and they consider this junk mail he said foley said that once a complaint is issued it is not hard to determine who sent the letter there is no doubt that we can trace any letter to its origin because their name is attached to the letter he said the sending of chain letters on electronic mail is the same as sending the letters in the u.s mail but life was highlighted by a bookstore employee s rendition of the greatest love of all presented saturday in packard lab auditorium harry dross the singing cashier in the lehigh bookstore dedicated the song to a close friend who died from aids along with assistant dean of stu dents sharon brown and centennial school life skills supervisor mary ann heller dross was a driving force in the event which raised money for the st luke's hospital aids memo rial fund a lot of people wanted to do something for aids awareness and we got together to do it keller said brown said i think that the idea of people coming together to work for a cause is really tremendous the show consisted of 16 acts performed by lehigh students and bethlehem residents tonight's performance was a celebration of life and love a sharing of talent and raising of awareness of a very serious disease said elizabeth olsen 95 the show raised 700 to help out withexpenses,"hellersaid everyone is talking about research what about counseling for patients and families and getting them the resources they are unable to afford the money from the event will provide an income supplement to low income people who have aids while also providing couaseling for their families this is the first year we're doing it and we plan on doing it next year and the year after that heller said many community businessmen contributed to the
