the brown and white vol 107 no 41 all the lehigh news first friday april 14 2000 by tammy harris news writer soaring banners mark start of greek week pledges present banners at competition to continue tradition while supporting the greek system monday's greek week opening cere monies drew students to sayre field for the banner competition between sorori ties and fraternities the opening ceremonies of greek week are a time for greek students to show their enthusiasm for their houses and the greek system as a result of last year's ceremonies when police had to break up several fights as fraternities destroyed each other's banners law enforcement offi cers were posted behind this year's crowd as well as two members of the events staff who were situated on the field as a precautionary measure greek affairs coordinator chris mulvihill commented on the necessity for these security measures it's been problematic in the past mulvihill said despite many people's worries this year's opening ceremony did not follow last years precedent and was a fun yet very civilized occasion the banner competition allows frater nity and sorority pledges the chance to create a banner that best represents their individual house and it's spirit ross trachtenberg 02 a member of lambda chi alpha fraternity and the inter-fraternity council greek week chair described the purpose behind the commencement ceremonies it's a chance for all the houses to present their new members to the greek system trachtenberg said the banners are a part of a tradition the excitement that pervaded the opening ceremony came from all of the work and time the pledges put into this event and others kelly smith 02 who pledged at delta gamma sorority was glad she had the opportunity to participate it was definitely worth all the time we put into making the banners smith said it turned out to be a great day the winner of the competition among the fraternities was delta tau delta its banner had the house's initials painted in gold purple and pink with the slogan does anyone else have a chance delta tau delta used their chapter b&w photo by max stokes alpha tau omega fraternity and alpha chi omega sorority after the opening ceremonies of greek week during the banner competition event pike picks new sorority dream girl by tracey lomrantz news writer the brothers of pi kappa alpha fraternity crowned their newest pike dream girl alexis roth 03 of alpha phi sorority on tuesday night in lower grace hall as part of greek week festivities roth was glad she got to keep alpha phi's four year winning tradition going as a pike dream girl i had a blast doing it roth said and of course i was happy to keep the crown in the alpha phi family roth's winning talents included singing and tap dancing to madonna's hanky panky which she said took a lot of practice i've been dancing for years and i knew i had so much support from the sisters in my house and my friends roth said it made it a much more fun and even relaxing time for me the pageant is an annual tradition for both the brothers of pike and the sorority women who compete each year president of pike corey ficke 01 said that this event is not just to crown pike's dream girl but also to raise money for the leukemia society of america though we haven't been able to calculate all of our revenues and expenses from the event i think we came close to raising a thousand dollars for the leukemia society of america ficke said this year's pike dream girl had contestants from each of the eight sororities competing in the evening talent and swimwear categories these segments were followed by a final round in which natalie ryan 03 and christine dißona 03 of delta gamma sorority margot paige 03 of alpha gamma delta sorority and roth all fought to become this year's pike dream girl many of the participants agreed the talent competition was both exciting and extremely nerve-wracking while the other categories were more relaxed ryan whose talent was a tap dance performance wasn't sure how she would react to being up on stage and in the spotlight with such a large audience i thought i would be much more embarrassed about doing it ryan said i could never have imagined myself up on stage doing that but it actu ally wasn't that bad with all of the other girls doing it with you irene bagby 03 of alpha omicron pi shared the same feelings of tension and excitement i was kind of nervous to start out with bagby said when i got up on stage and heard my entire house screaming for me i became really excited dißona was
