the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 37 friday march 31 2000 all the lehigh news first zeta psi dissolved for four years fraternity kicked off hill after defying no kegs rule this january by mickey brown managing editor the university committee on discipline ucod ruled march 9 to dis solve zeta psi fraternity for eight semesters because of an alcohol violation it received for a snow day incident january 25 according to a prepared statement by vincent munley professor of economics and zeta psi's faculty advisor four individu als brought a keg of beer into the house which is illegal on lehigh's campus the fraternity however filed a formal appeal march 4 on the standards that university disciplinary procedures were violated in a way that probably adversely affected the outcome of the case and the sanction was unduly harsh and not justified tom dubreuil assistant dean of stu dents and director of judicial affairs com mented on the situation all sanctions are in abeyance until all appeals are exhausted dubreuil said in the original trial the committee deliberated for about 30 minutes before reaching its decision i thought the trial went very well chadwick said when they told me what the sanctions were i was very much shocked the outcome was not what i suspected the appeals committee will begin reviewing the appeal april 4 and will have to decide whether to grant zetes another hearing or keep the sanctions in place zeta psi president dave chadwick 02 is optimistic about zetes future i would still think we have a legiti mate chance just like at the first trial chadwick said i would hope the school would work with us also included in zetes appeal is the accusation that the ucod made a pre conceived decision in the house's march 9 hearing based on the brevity of the com mittee's review the appeal also assesses that members of the committee namely jennifer volchko associate dean of stu dents for residence life was involved in zetes past disciplinary dealings and b&w photo by jordan guttman zeta psi fraternity has been dissolved from campus for eight semesters by the university committee on discipline after an alcohol violation in january bursar departs for reasons unknown by eli conner editor at large craig wood who has been lehigh's bursar for the past 10 years is no longer an employee of the university wood's last day of work was march 15 whether he resigned or was fired is as yet unclear but wood said that he has not departed the university for another job and is currently unemployed even though wood's last day of work was more than two weeks ago and a posting on the lehigh web site dated march 17 lists his position as available there has been no official announcement about his departure it remains to be seen if the adminis tration will comment on the reasons for his departure wood said he could not comment on his departure but did say he was not upset with the university i have no problem with lehigh wood said lehigh was good to me i felt that i had some good relationships with the students i enjoyed working there according to penny savakis assistant director of showing philanthropy by lindsey pratt assistant news editor theta delta chi fraternity will take over management of the annual good scholar election from zeta psi fraternity according to professor emeritus of eco nomics alvin cohen cohen is the treasurer of the good scholar election foundation which he created a decade ago to raise money for cancer research according to cohen he began seeking a new sponsor for the event after zetes was convicted of violating the uni versity code of conduct at a hearing that took place march 9 i had a luncheon with zetes on friday and by that time we knew they would be off-campus next year cohen said he met with representatives of theta delt earlier this month about the possi bility of the fraternity sponsoring the good scholar election charlie dyreyes 00 said theta delt was approached by cohen because of their history of philanthropy we've had a pretty good service record in the past dyreyes said we've held a lot of philanthropic events cohen said theta delt was an appro priate candidate for several reasons they were there at a time i was looking around and they really raised a very substantial amount of money in previous elections he said cohen pointed out that in the three years theta delt has participated in the good scholar election the fraternity has raised about 3,000 each year in comparison most other fraternities and sororities raise 200 to 300 per year dyreyes was enthusiastic about theta delt's sponsorship of the event it's a very good thing he said we will continue with the great tradition that zetes started and hopefully
