the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 34 friday march 10 2000 all the lehigh news first williams to inspire graduating class by alex olbrecht editor in chief montel williams of the montel williams show will be the commenc ment speaker for the class of 2000 during graduation exercises june 5 we had all kinds of very broad sug gestions from athletes to media personal ities to politicians senior class president jason clemens said in a press release but what clearly emerged was a desire to have someone young engaging well-spoken and motivating we think montel williams is an ideal choice williams appointment was the product of a long search class officers secretary kelly collins 00 treasurer bryan perler 00 vice president gregg hilzer 00 and clemens polled students in the graduating class during the spring of 1999 to deter mine who would make the best speaker williams was their top choice according to clemens williams name was first mentioned in the survey and after carefully reviewing canidates the officers made their decision after obtaing proper approval the president's office sent a request to williams agent lehigh's class of 2000 is very excited to have such a young and energetic speaker to come to lehigh to celebrate our commencement clemens said in a statement mr williams is a very well spoken individual with plenty of things to say that coupled with his fame makes him the kind of speaker our class will always remember during his daytime talk show williams addresses many issues facing young adults today class officers felt this was a characteristic the speaker needed he's a big proponent of helping young people succeed clemens said in a press release we see lehigh as a train ing ground for future success and we're hoping that his inspirational message will be a perfect fit for us during the ceremony at murray h goodman stadium williams will recieve an honorary doctor of humane letters degree after high school graduation williams served in die u.s marine corps and even tually attended the u.s naval academy prep school after earning two promotions within his first six months of service upon completion of prep school and under a presidential appointment williams became the first african american to attend the prep school and graduate from the u.s naval academy he left with a degree in general engi neering and minored in international secu rity affairs williams served as a special duty intelligence officer in cryptology earning several military awards including . the armed forces heated tuesday as vice president al gore and republican texas governor george w bush clinched wins in a number of state primaries leaving the nation as well as lehigh political clubs waiting to see who will receive nominations former senator bill bradley and arizona senator john mccain are faced with the possibility that their run for the white house may be turning into a walk home in what has been dubbed super tuesday 11 states held primary elec tions that help determine which candi dates will receive presidential nomina tions for the democratic and republican party bids the results of the primaries factor into how many delegates each candidate receives as each candidate wins a primary he receives an allotted number of dele i gates that will be used for i the nomination of his i respective party tuesday's results deter mined over half the republican delegates and a third of democratic delegates on the democratic side gore deci sively beat bradley in all 11 states putting bradley virtually out of contention for the democratic party nomination tuesday was basically do or die for bradley john strasser 01 the president news of lehigh's democrat club said nicole parisi-smith 00 who cam paigned for bradley over the weekend in new york agreed there have been so many ups and i downs with the democratic nomi nation he's just been taking it state to state parisi-smith said but i think after tuesday it's pretty obvious that gore is going to get the nomination bradley essentially conceded defeat tuesday night after the primary results were in he said he would be discussing options with his advisors but according to the washington post most expect that lie will be dropping out of the race in the lext few days with bradley as a probable primary dropout
