the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 33 all the lehigh news first tuesday march 7 2000 regurgitator's talents captivate crowd by meredith bartlett news writer stevie starr known as the regurgitator entertained a large crowd saturday night in the great room at ulrich student center after an introduction by his manager mike malley the 34-year-old starr dressed in a shiny gold jacket and black pants immediately dazzled the audience by popping a light bulb in his mouth and swallowing it following a loud sucking noise a smack to his chest and a pained facial expression the light bulb was no longer visible after swallowing the object starr began to talk to the crowd proving that the light bulb was not somehow con cealed in his mouth but actually in his stomach starr never explained how he pulled off this trick the audience generally responded favorably to starr's odd talent it was disgusting but it was interest ing amanda leong 03 said of starr's performance starr's next feat was swallowing more than 10 quarters as the coins dis appeared one at a time he held the microphone next to his mouth to magnify the clinking sound produced when the coins landed on each other in his stomach starr then slightly jiggled his stomach and made a few gurgling noises this process allowed him to easily bring the coins back up starr asked the audience to decide how many quarters he would regurgi tate at one time he could even bring the quarters back wet or dry starr later swallowed a combination of cigarette smoke and liquid dish detergent to produce bubbles filled with smoke he also devoured larger objects such as a billiards ball and rubix cube bringing them back up after a brief period of time starr has also mastered the trick of swallowing hazardous chemicals such as butane lighter fluid one brave audience member volun teered to light the fluid after starr regurgitated it a flaming ball of fire resulted bringing cheers from preventing future instances tom dubreuil director of judicial affairs and assistant dean of students spoke at a panhel meeting at delta gamma sorority thursday to discuss the definitions and consequences of hazing dubreuil's goal was to clearly define what constitutes hazing he explained that while he could not address any spe cific rumors on campus involving hazing due to confidentiality issues he would discuss generalities to prevent future instances he said it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to hazing there is no minimum number of group members that need to be involved before a situa tion is considered to be hazing all it takes is one member to be considered responsible for the group as a whole dubreuil said there was one instance of a 12-hour hearing over the actions of one individual who was held account able for a house according to dubreuil there are two categories of hazing that he calls big h and little h he said that big h hazing consists of branding forced consumption of alcohol or other substances late night activities and paddling he explained that little h hazing is not as serious as big h hazing but is still hazing and will not be tolerated little h hazing includes taking keys from candidates and making candidates wear uniforms or embarrassing outfits jessyka scoppetta 01 the panhel rep resentative for kappa alpha theta soror ity said she was happy the definition of hazing was made clear at the meeting a lot of people don't know what is hazing and what is not scoppetta said the line between what is hazing and what is not is so blurred it is good that dubreuil defined the line dubreuil then discussed the actions the university takes when an instance of hazing is reported the first thing i do is call the police because hazing is a crime dubreuil told the group the police will then report to the house and take statements from offi cers members and new members dubreuil said the next step is to put the new member education program on hold no contact is allowed between new members and the sorority until a decision has been reached after the program is paused dubreuil starts an investigation talking to all the members over a period of two to three weeks he said the investigation takes time because diere are so many members involved and it would be impossible to see 60 members in one week the purpose of the investigation is to discover if there is a possibility of hazing if there is the case will go to a hearing in front of the university committee on discipline ucod if the case is an instance of little h hazing dubreuil said the university can work directly with the responsible chapter rather than going to a ucod hearing consequences for hazing vary depending on the severity of the situa tion dubreuil said a chapter may be sus pended anywhere from one to eight semesters permanent chapter termina tion is also a possibility a chapter can lose its new member class officers may be removed from
