the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 107 no 32 friday march 3 2000 all the lehigh news jirst by jillian marquart internet tests first amendment rights news editor the question of whether or not the internet should be censored was dis cussed by mary johnson an american civil liberties union aclu legisla tive counsel member during his presen tation entided freedom of speech on the internet sex lies & cyberspace monday m sinclair auditorium the latest technological advances involving computers have created a world m which anyone can practice their first amendment right to freedom of speech yet with e-mail instant messenger and web sites comes the question is there a line which cannot be crossed the freedom of speech is not some thing that is easily understood johnson said but how good is free speech if you have nowhere to excercise it the aclu was founded m 1920 with the goal to defend the constitution and the bill of rights it is clear that everyone has the right to freedom of speech johnson said as a lobbyist for the aclu johnson and other members work to uphold the same goal of their organization which was created 80 years ago johnson noted that the first amendment is the building block of all other rights but as with most things there are exceptions to the rule congress has stated these exceptions for the internet to be obscenity fighting words and slander according to johnson this could mean that if a medium of expression on the internet such as pornography or directions on how to make a bomb is viewed by congress as unacceptable these sites could be prohibited for not meeting the standards created for first amendment purposes johnson pointed out the three major threats to free speech on the internet they include open access issues commerce and government censorship and control johnson and the aclu are fighting these attempts at censorship proclaim ing that they are congressional attacks on the right to free speech there are a lot of disgusting things on the internet but it's not like they are flooding your computer screen johnson said you have to search for them most concern about obscenity and children is based on the accessibility of adult and child pornography web sites johnson did emphasize that the aclu does not defend child pornogra phy because it is not covered under the o i ongress shall make no law + respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exer cise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances the first amendment first amendment those who promote child pornography on the internet will be prosecuted and sent to jail according to johnson laws con cerning the internet as a free speech zone are not simply cut and dry the law teaches us to go through life working backwards johnson said technology is not always covered under the law and ends up trying to catch up new play takes stage at zoellner arts center by meredith bartlett student director james mooney presents his first theatrical production m diamond theatre news writer zoellner arts center will be introduc ing its newest student run play this weekend entitled the foreigner under the student direction of james mooney 00 the foreigner written by larry shue will be performed m the diamond theater of zoellner arts center today and tomorrow at 8 p.m sunday at 2 p.m and wednesday thursday and march 10 at 8 p.m it's just damn funny mooney said about his first zoellner production after being selected for performance last year mooney worked indepen dently over the summer on the play analysis aspect of the production the play was cast m january and has been m rehearsal for the last five weeks mooney had no intentions of becoming a theater major when he arrived at lehigh i was cast for a play freshman year and was hooked mooney said the transition from acting to directing was pretty natural three directing and acting classes later mooney is still excited about his major directing the foreigner is mooney s senior project he is distinguished as the only student director to perform on the main stage this year mooney went through an application process to bring the foreigner to the stage he went before a faculty com mittee that worked with him to select this particular play the group was attracted to the idea of staging a comedy mooney said that by directing this play his senior year is ending on an upbeat note student designers those m charge of lighting sound and set were also chosen by committee mooney said his student designers and faculty advisors theatre professor gus ripa and assistant theatre professor erica hoelscher have helped the play come together for the play brad engle 02 and aaron bergman 03 perfected british accents with the help of ripa while other actors had to learn a southern accent the play revolves around charlie a shy englishman played by engle charlie's adventures begin when he is coerced into a weekend getaway m the deep south what begins as a peaceful retreat gets interesting when residents are led to believe that charlie does not speak english despite his best efforts charlie receives an overdose of shady back woods culture i had so much fun with the character and i got to do some improv engle said putting on a production of this size requires a lot of dedication cast rehearsals were held five times a week for four hours engle said the devotion and effort the cast put into the play will be obvious when viewing the performance the special effect lighting and sound careful costuming and creative set design all flow together the amount of work that goes m the fun that we have that's the
