the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 28 friday february 11 2000 all the lehigh news first professors demand an increase in salary by tammy harris news writer a general faculty meeting was held monday evening to address concerns that the faculty is underpaid professors argued that lehigh's net revenue rose from more than 150 million to more than 180 million from 1992 to 1999 professors demanded that the increase in revenue be reflected in their paychecks president gregory c farrington explained to professors that the university could not presendy afford a salary increase according to farrington a rise in tuition is the only way salaries will increase farrington explained it would be uncon ventional for lehigh to raise its tuition lehigh can only raise tuition relative to other universities such as harvard and yale farrington rejected the proposal to redirect funds from other areas into pro fessors salaries diverting resources from other areas won't get us there farrington said he explained that lehigh has been redirecting funds for more than five years as a result lehigh's classrooms aren't in as good shape as they should be farrington said other universities such as the university of pennsylvania and lafayette and moravian colleges are struggling to pay professors their desired salaries professors feel their salaries are too low but farrington believes their wages are fair in comparison to those at institu tions of similar standing and lehigh pro fessors cannot expect to be paid the same salaries as harvard or yale professors farrington said you have to compare yourself against the appropriate competi tion you can't have a graduate astrology department here and compare it against an astrology department at the massachusetts institute of technology and say we're underpaid community service rewards all involved by chris litman senior news writer what does a trip to africa and a local women's group have in common they are both activities that might make you think twice about what it means to do community service or what amnesty lefevre 00 likes to call community involvement lefevre has spent much of her college career trying to get others to realize that community activism does not have to be a chore but also can be rewarding last fall along with other upperclass men she tried to organize lehigh stu dents from different backgrounds to par ticipate in projects throughout the area along with julie demotte community service coordinator lefevre presented programs which might appeal to students specific interests we presented projects so that whether you're a psych or math major you could get involved lefevre said some of the programs were in the morning some were in the afternoons during the week lefevre said her goal was to show people that even if they just had one hour a week to spare they could not only be helping others but also getting involved in their communities according to lefevre there is a wide range and variety of activities in which one could participate individuals could play basketball with children at the local boys and girls club spend time with the elderly or tutor children you would be amazed at how many local organizations are right here in the area and are in desperate need of volun teers she said according to lefevre all it takes is for people to realize that community involve ment can be fun as well as enriching you have the choice of realizing this and doing something about it or you could spend your time just sitting around and living for yourself lefevre said changing old habits is perhaps the most challenging thing about community service lefevre said there are so many ways a lehigh student can get involved and in many cases it only requires a rethinking of how to spend one's free time for instance there will be a trip to kenya this summer offered to lehigh students sponsored by the global union and the canaan foundation the purpose of this overseas volunteer program is to help educate teachers in using computers william hunter assistant dean and director of the global union international student program will organize and help lead the trip which begins may 20 and ends june 7 hunter believes the trip to kenya will be a tremendous opportunity for anyone interested in doing an interna tional community service project going to such a far-out place experi encing a different culture with different traditions will certainly open a student's eyes to a whole new world hunter said it's a chance to give back and to connect with a different culture hunter agrees with lefevre that people should not wait to get involved with areas in which they live and pos sibly even other countries he believes that by participating in these types of activities a person will be able to get much more out of it than he or she has put in hunter feels this trip may not be cut out for everyone this is not going to be a trip to the taj mahal hunter said accommodations will be limited and people will of course need to get vaccinations people will have to be very flexible if the question for some people is why should i get involved lefevre has a personal but universal answer she sees herself as being obligated to interact with others who have experi enced different things everyone has problems and the kids that i see and work with aren't dif ferent in that way lefevre said but then again i will never have to deal with 100 percent of the things these kids have dealt with in five years of their lives as a person that has had so much in terms of opportunities how can anyone not feel obligated to try and do something for others lefevre said see lefevre page 4 b&w photo by leigh pravda elizabeth scofield was
