the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 26 friday february 4 2000 all the lehigh news first university supports diversity on campus multicultural center is created through renovation of former black student union by alexandra goldmacher news writer the black student union located on the second floor of the university center is being renovated and transformed into a multicultural center dean of students sharon basso believes the multicultural center will be useful to many students this project is a wonderful addi tion to our campus and a significant demonstration of the value we place on diversity she said basso said that while in the early 1980s the office focused primarily on african-american students in recent years it has expanded to reflect the increasingly diverse population of lehigh's student body the office of multicultural affairs provides academic and interpersonal support services and programs for stu dents of color primarily african american hispanic and latino stu dents basso said in addition some native american and asian american students utilize the center for support an additional goal of the renovation include making the center a visually appealing useful helpful and inviting area for students the physical renovations include adding windows to the hallway new paint and brand new furniture the multicultural affairs office hopes these renovations will create a welcom ing environment that will promote student interaction with a hallway full of windows will allow students to take a peek at the facilities the center has to offer as they are walking by the office also hopes to create a center that will serve as a site for workshops lec tures films and guest speakers to help facilitate these plans the multicultural center will be furnished with computers a television vcr magazines videos and books focusing on diversity the cost of the renovation of the black student union center and con struction of the new multicultural center totals over 50,000 and is being funded by several sources these sources include a grant from the alcoa foundation a company that sup b&w photo by alex strickler builders have been diligently working on the construction of the new multicultural center in order to meet their upcoming march 1 deadline clubs provide several new opportunities by alison meltzer news writer lehigh students have the opportunity to become involved with a variety of clubs on campus this list of over 100 activities includes everything from foreign languages to a gospel choir students who feel a varsity sport is too intense or demanding can check out the wide range of sports clubs available including lacrosse rugby rifling pingpong mountain hiking volleyball tennis and hockey as well as several others halley redder 02 is a member of the ice hockey club's b team we don't have that crazy training regiment or the travel schedule which the varsity players have rechler said it's definitely less competitive i think this is a very close team just the way it is fun-orient ed the atmosphere in the locker room and on the bench is very light which makes this very social rechler explained that while the team enjoys a friendly environment the hockey club is nothing to be taken lightly we definitely compete and we definitely want to win rechler said rechler's roommate mark spedaliere 02 has never played hockey his interests lie elsewhere spedaliere is the undergraduate student representa tive of the campus master planning committee he is also the founder and president of the italian club lehigh's philosophy club was just reinstated last year the club engages in discussions covering topics ranging from dreams to love and existensialism to jell-o the club also takes retreats to the poconos for reading parties where members focus their discus sion on a specific philosophical book jeffrey syracuse 02 is the club's president and he explained that the retreats are intended to get away from everything to have a quiet discussion it divorces us from the distractions of everyday life syracuse said the mustard and cheese drama society the second oldest drama society in the nation is for those who wish to become involved with any aspect of theatre students become members after completing work on at least two productions student roles with production can include being an actor or actress a scene and set designer or stage managers nicholas bliablias 00 has been a member of the drama club for his four years at lehigh it's a welcome addition to anyone interested in performing arts at lehigh bliablias said although lehigh does not have an equestrian team the grounds of pleasant hollow farms serves as home base for the equestrian club members are able to take lessons or show off their skills in optional competitions nicole menges 01 was the club's president for one and a half years she explains there is no experience necessary for membership you can take as many private lessons as you want or take lessons in groups she said menges said the club has introduced her to several new friends and gives her the opportunity to spend
