the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 16 tuesday november 9 1999 all the lehigh news first by bevin milavsky ranger challenge team blows away competition news writer lehigh's reserve officers training corps rotc ranger challenge team swept the opposition the weekend of oct 22 at fort indian town gap ranger challenge which is like the var sity sport of rotc includes eight events these are the army physical fitness test apft basic rifle marksmanship land navigation a hand grenade assault course rope bridge patrolling test weapons assem bly/disassembly and a 10k ruck run the apft consists of two minutes of push-ups two minutes of sit-ups and a two-mile run the basic rifle marksmanship event is tested with an m-16 land navigation requires teams to plot grid points on a map then locate them on land the participants work in two-man buddy teams they have 80 minutes to find 24 points since each team has to find a cer tain number of points the faster people are given the further distances the grenades used for the hand grenade assault course are not live there are six tar gets that participants run between and aim for from different positions the rope bridge is constructed between two trees over a river participants cross over one at a time and then the last person is pulled across each team consists of four people the average time for this event was about two minutes the patrolling test covers one chapter of a field manual on patrolling the weapons assembly/disassembly test is timed on an m-16 and a 9 mm pistol the 10k ruck run is the final event it involves running in full uniform including boots carrying weapons and backpacks which are called rucks the course was mainly hills this year the race took a little over an hour to complete each team receives one point for placing first and the team with the least points at the end of the challenge is the winner lehigh defended its 1 1 year history of always com ing in first or second place ron baker 02 thought the competition varied in terms of training and skill there are 19 schools that go from real ly giving you a run for your money to teams that obviously didn't train he said the university of pittsburgh lehigh's biggest competitor took second place los ing by half a point the university of scranton is another school that is typically a strong competitor lehigh came in first in the hand grenade assault course and second in the apft the rope bridge weapons assembly/disassembly and the 10k ruck run the team got third place in patrolling fourth in navigation and seventh in rifle marksmanship participation in the ranger challenge is completely voluntary the cadets run the competition and there is no faculty interfer ence or coaching as with other sports team captain chris wehri 00 said because the event is totally run by cadets it is even more important when the team wins wehri described the process of selecting the team any cadet can participate but he or she might not get to compete it's a varsity sport in that aspect wehri said even though you try out for it you don't necessarily get to play wehri said the training process gives him a good idea of who will be the nine starters training is very intense at the start but becomes more focused once the weaker links are weeded out wehri described a ranger's mentality all-night dance marathon by allison rabinovitz dance marathon proceeds benefit the susan g komen foundation for breast cancer research assistant news editor the panhellenic council is giving students the opportu nity to dance the night away at its first dance marathon nov 13 from 9 p.m.-9 a.m in lower grace hall there will be a 5 fee at the door all proceeds will ben efit the susan g komen foundation the susan g komen foundation is the largest private funder of research dedicated solely to breast cancer in the united states since its introduction in 1982 it has raised over 90 million for breast cancer research education screening and treatment fraternities will be closed for the evening and buses will be transporting students to and from the dance marathon the panhellenic council has also extended its invita tion to lehigh faculty and members of the surrounding community it placed an advertisement in the lafayette and gave a public service announcement to 8 104 a local radio station alicia bonaly 00 coordinator of the dance marathon said the council hopes the event will attract a diverse group of people we hope that lehigh students faculty and the commu nity can come together to enjoy a fun atmosphere while at the same time supporting a great cause bonaly said the dance marathon will spice up the evening with djs and a wide variety of music several dance contests will be held and the council will also be raffling off prizes the bands providing entertainment for the event are to be announced goosey gander bethlehem brewworks campus pizza confetti cafe wood dining services and g's steaks and subs donated food for the dance marathon the dean of students office greek affairs onesource and facilities services at lehigh also provided financial assistance to the council to reduce the costs of the event panhellenic president gina marnell 00 brought up the idea for the dance marathon in her speech while running for see rotc page 4 see dance page 4 hthe
