brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 14 tuesday november 2 1999 all the lehigh news first garbage rocks stabler converses with crowd by will little news writer the musical groups garbage and lit invaded stabler arena friday at 7:30 p.m as part of mtv's campus invasion the concert began with opening act lit which played a short loud and energetic set to a half-filled arena after a short break an army of screaming fans readied themselves to see garbage garbage was met with a roar from the audience garbage opened their set with the sin gle from the romeo and juliet sound track 1 crush supervixen then fol lowed with its recent single i think i'm paranoid and temptation waits during temptation waits lead vocalist shirley manson walked off stage and mingled with crowd members in the general admission section and walked back to the seats in the back of the arena " i just wanted to see how you guys are doing back there manson said she did this because she only gets to see the crowd in front manson constantly talked to the crowd and pushed for a response when they met her with a less-than-enthusiastic reply when i ask you a question i expect a reply manson said where i come from if you're asked a question and you don't reply it's considered quite rude after that the crowd was sure to give her enthusiastic responses garbage played a solid set for close to an hour and a half and performed many songs from the self-titled 1995 debut album as well as many from their version 2.0 album which came out last may they also gave fans some new mater ial including a song entitled the world is not enough the theme for the new james bond movie of the same name jabre burns 02 enjoyed garbage's performance but didn't like lit's act the lead singer of lit looked ridicu lous because the whole entire conceit he was playing air guitar burns said burns liked the part of the concert when manson came into the crowd the best thing about the with the garbage concert see pages 4 and 5 speaker tells the history of feminist psychology by gina montana news writer dr jean marecek discussed the history of feminist psy chology bringing it up to date with its role in today's soci ety during dutiful daughters unfaithful wenches feminists in psychology thursday she said that those who utilize psychology to increase their knowledge of women in an empirical statistical based sense are dutiful daughters in contrast she identified others who use critical analysis to dig deeper beyond the statistical information of psychology in order to better understand women as unfaithful wenches wenches use the abandonment of psychology to do good work on the psychology of women marecek said she emphasized this tug-of-war between the unification of psychology and feminism marecek said much of the development of feminist psy chology stemmed from studies and research conducted against the established biases toward the gender differences between women and men the studies concluded that out of the 1,400 patronizing differences claimed only four were judged conclusive the women question claims a sight of controversy and consternation marecek said the daughters definition of gender is a collection of attributes that can be concisely measured and scaled in the manner of inventory marecek conducted a study to further observe the essence of feminist psychoanalysis in the 19905 she surveyed 104 feminist psychologists inquiring inquiring about their lives as feminists the results of her study showed that only two psycholo gists surveyed openly admitted their feminist position it was conclusive that there continues to be a backlash of feminism throughout the 20th century despite the results of her study marecek reported the increase in graduate level women in psychology she stressed the gradual acceptance by society that psy chology is based upon differing cultures environments and societies psychology depends on culture marecek said feminists of psychology are torn between their allegiance to the deep-rooted science of psychology and the political mobilization of feminist they are in a double position marecek the coordinator of women's studies at swathmorc college co-authored the book making a difference psychology and constitution of gender during her 30 years in the field she has conducted research on this subject in several different cultures includ ing that of sri lanka an island off the coast of india marecek focused heavily upon the dilemma of dual allegiance between the study of conventional psychology as a
